The New York Yankees have not been very aggressive this offseason, but they did finally make a trade to acquire a starting pitcher on Tuesday.
Ryan Weathers was brought in via a trade with the Miami Marlins. Amid rumors about the Yankees potentially pursuing a star pitcher, the Weathers trade came up a bit disappointing.
Despite the trade for Weathers, New York fans have been hit by an exciting update.
According to a report from Brendan Kuty and Chris Kirschner of The Athletic on January 13, the Yankees are not done pursuing trades for top-tier starting pitching after acquiring Weathers.
“Don’t expect acquiring Weathers to halt the Yankees’ search for a higher-level starting pitcher,” they reported .
Who Is Ryan Weathers & What Does He Bring to the New York Yankees?

There are some intriguing family connections between Weathers and New York. His dad, David Weathers, played for the Yankees in the past. That fun fact was noted by team insider Jack Curry.
“David Weathers pitched for the 1996 Yankees during a 19-year major league career. Now Ryan, his son, joins him in pinstripes,” Curry wrote on X . “The elder Weathers allowed one run in 11 innings in the ‘96 postseason.”
The younger Weathers has shown flashes of big potential. He performed well over the last two years with the Marlins.
During the 2024 season, Weathers made 16 starts in Miami, compiling a 5-6 record to go along with a 3.63 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, a 3.3 K/BB ratio, and 86.2 innings pitched. He backed up those numbers in 2025 with a 2-2 record, a 3.99 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP, a 3.1 K/BB ratio, and 38.1 innings pitched in eight starts.
Weathers will have a chance to make a positive impact for New York this season. He is just 26 years old and could have a long future with the Yankees if the trade works out as planned.
At the end of the day, this was a low-price and potentially high-reward type of deal.
Which Targets Could the Yankees Pursue Next?
GettyTrade idea has Yankees acquiring Freddy Peralta.
Now, it’s time to dive into the report from The Athletic about New York potentially not being done in its search for an elite starting pitcher.
One big name that the Yankees have been connected to all offseason long has been Milwaukee Brewers star Freddy Peralta. Plenty of teams have had interest in Peralta, but many have viewed New York as being a front-runner to acquire him.
Peralta would be the definition of a big-time addition for the Yankees’ rotation.
With the Brewers in 2025, the 29-year-old starting pitcher made 33 starts and ended up with a 17-6 record, a 2.70 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP, a 3.1 K/BB ratio, and 176.2 innings pitched. Those numbers would take New York’s rotation to another level.
Another name to watch could be Minnesota Twins star Joe Ryan. He has been rumored to be a trade candidate since the deadline last year and there are still rumblings that a deal could take place.
Ryan finished the 2025 season with a 13-10 record, 3.42 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 5.0 K/BB ratio, and 171 innings pitched in 30 starts and 31 total appearances.
Expect to hear more rumors about the Yankees in the coming days. They don’t appear to be done just yet this offseason.
