Scores, news, and notes, from around the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Sunday, May 4, 2025.
Toledo Mud Hens 7, Worcester Red Sox 3 (box )
A late burst of offense helped the Mud Hens overcome a rough relief outing by Matt Manning as they took this series four games to two on Sunday. Matt Vierling joined Manuel Margot, along with John Brebbia in the bullpen, in the Detroit Tigers ’ rehab program. Vierling walked twice and struck out once in his first ABs since the beginning of spring training.
Lefty Dietrich Enns got the start over Manning, and so perhaps this finally the start of a full conversion to relief for the 2016 first rounder. Enns was very good once again, tossing five innings of one run ball.
Brian Serven got the Hens an early lead with his first home run of the season in the third inning. Andrew Navigato added a solo shot of his own in the fifth, and it was 2-0 Toledo.

Enns allowed a run in the fifth on a trio of two-out singles before departing. Manning took over in the sixth and was greeted by a Marcelo Mayer single. A pickoff attempt went wild and was compounded by first baseman Bligh Madris collecting the ball and then throwing it away again. Mayer scored, and it was 2-2.
In the seventh, Ryan Kreidler led off with a triple and scored on a Navigato sacrifice fly. Manning allowed a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh and then hit Phillip Sikes. A Roman Anthony grounded forced Sikes at second, but Anthony stole second and Nick Sogard singled in the lead runner before Manning gave way to PJ Poulin. The lefty struck out Mayer to strand two, and it was a tie game again, this time a 3-3 score.
Finally in the eighth the Mud Hens offense seized control and Carlos Mendoza was the spark. Pinch-hitting for Vierling in the eighth, Mendoza led off with a walk and then stole second base. Manuel Margot reached on an infield single and after a Brewer Hicklen fly out, Akil Baddoo ripped a single to right field that was too sharp to score on. The bases were juiced as the Red Sox went back to their bullpen. Madris greeted new reliever Isaiah Campbell with a two-run single, and Kreider followed with his second triple of the game. That made it 7-3, and Poulin and Matt Gage had no trouble closing this one out.
Kreidler: 2-3, R, 2 RBI, 2 3B, BB, K
Navigato: 1-3, R, 2 RBI, HR
Margot: 2-5, R
Enns: 5.0 IP, ER, 5 H, BB, 3 K
Coming Up Next: The Hens come home to welcome in the Iowa Cubs on Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m. ET.
Erie SeaWolves 1, Binghamton Rumble Ponies 0 (Gm1)(F/7)(box )
The SeaWolves secured at least a series split with a strong effort on the pitching and defensive side of the game. Joseph Montalvo no-hit the Ponies for five innings before Austin Bergner came on for a six-out save.
Meanwhile, the offense was having a ton of trouble with right-hander Jonah Tong. Tong struck out eight in four innings of work, and the SeaWolves struggled with him, but finally in the fifth inning they broke through.
Danny Serretti led off with a single, and Jim Jarvis followed with a grounder to second that went for an error. Max Anderson slapped a ground ball back up the middle, and Serretti scored the only run of the day.
Bergner took over with the one-run lead and quickly allowed a leadoff single in the sixth. He then picked off the runner and wrapped up the inning with just a walk allowed. He walked the leadoff man in the seventh inning as well, but a ground out, and then a game-ending line drive off the bat of Travis Swaggerty was converted into a double play by Max Anderson to finish this one.
Valencia: 2-3
Anderson: 1-3, RBI, 2 K
Montalvo (W, 2-0): 5.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, BB, 2 K
Binghamton Rumble Ponies 6, Erie SeaWolves 4 (Gm2)(F/7)(box )
A good outing for Troy Melton came to a crashing halt in the fifth inning of this one, and the bullpen crumbled even further as the SeaWolves squandered an early lead.
Melton wasn’t real sharp early, but he was able to pitch through a bit of traffic in the second and the fourth. Meanwhile, the offense was giving him a lead.
Roberto Campos reached on catcher’s interference in the bottom of the first, and Eduardo Valencia brought him home with a two-run homer to left field. In the third, Trei Cruz led off with a walk and scored on a Campos double to left. Thayron Liranzo walked, and a double steal attempt got Campos to third though Liranzo was cut down at second. Eliezer Alfonzo singled in Campos, and it was 4-0 SeaWolves.

After four scoreless, Melton allowed a single and a double to start the fifth. Troy Watson took over, and he allowed both inherited runners to score along with one more as the Rumble Ponies closed the gap to 4-3 Erie.
Reliever Yosber Sanchez allowed two runs in the sixth, one the result of his own throwing error, and Drew Sommers allowed a run in the top of the seventh to get to the final score.
The SeaWolves did mount a seventh inning threat. Danny Serretti doubled with one out and Trei Cruz walked. A Campos line out followed, but Liranzo drew another walk to load the bases with two outs. Unfortunately Valencia struck out to end this one.
Cruz: 1-2, R, 2 BB, K
Campos: 1-3, 2 R, RBI, 2B, K
Melton: 4.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, 5 K
Coming Up Next: The SeaWolves stay home to welcome in the Altoona Curve starting on Tuesday night.
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 7, West Michigan Whitecaps 3 (box )
Kenny Serwa and Max Alba were both knocked around on Sunday as the Timber Rattlers fought back again to earn a series split.
The Whitecaps had an early lead in this one. Izaac Pacheco singled with one out in the top of the second inning and then scored on an Andrew Jenkins triple. Jack Penney lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Jenkins, and it was 2-0 Whitecaps.
A walk to Pacheco and another one to Jenkins led to another run in the fourth as reliever Yerlin Rodriguez took over for Wisconsin. Penney singled to score Pacheco before Jenkins was thrown out trying to take third on the play.
So, the Whitecaps held a 3-0 lead, but just about everything went wrong from there.
Serwa cruised through three innings, but in the fourth a leadoff walk and then a single sparked a three-run inning for the Rattlers that knocked Serwa out of the game. Colin Fields cleaned up the inning, and then Alba took over in the fifth.
The Whitecaps got a walk to Josue Briceño and then a John Peck single with one out in the sixth, but that went nowhere. Alba came back out and just didn’t have much command of anything. Two walks, three singles, and a pair of sacrifice hits made it a 7-3 game, and the Whitecaps never really mounted a comeback effort.
Briceño: 1-3, 2B, BB
Penney: 2-3, 2 RBI
Jenkins: 1-3, R, RBI, 3B, BB
Serwa: 3.1 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, K
Coming Up Next: The Whitecaps had to settle for a series split on the road. Now they’ll come home to play the Lansing Lugnuts starting on Tuesday night.
Lakeland Flying Tigers 8, Palm Beach Cardinals 3 (box )
The Flying Tigers ran their record to 15-12 with a three-game sweep of the Cardinals completed on Sunday.
Hayden Minton has been on fire to start the year, and the right-hander turned into a decent start on Sunday. He was cruising along until issuing a two-out walk in the fourth. A Yordalin Pena doubled followed, and then Pena scored on a single to make it 2-0 Cardinals. Ignacio Briceno allowed a run in the fifth to make it 3-0, but it was all Lakeland from there.
In the bottom of the seventh, Garrett Pennington led off with a single and took second with one-out on a wild pitch. Cristian Santana drew a walk, and a line drive single from David Smith loaded the bases. Enderson Delgado was hit by a pitch to force in a run and then Woody Hadeen stepped to the dish and lifted a towering fly ball just over the wall in right field for a grand slam. 5-3 Lakeland.

They weren’t done in the inning as Bryce Rainer and Franyerber Montilla followed with solid singles. Montilla stole second base, and Rainer then scored on a soft infield single to make 6-3.
Thomas Bruss and his power fastball handled the Cardinals with ease in the eighth, and in the bottom half, Smith and Hadeen walked and with two outs Rainer singled in Smith for a 7-3 lead. Montilla again followed suit with a single of his own to plate Hadeen and make it 8-3. The Flying Tigers middle infield had a pretty good game at the plate and in the field.

Rainer: 2-5, R, RBI, 2K
Hadeen: 1-3, 2 R, 4 RBI, HR, 2 BB
Minton: 4.0 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K
Coming Up Next: The Flying Tigers head to Bradenton for a six-game set with the Marauders starting on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. ET.
