Wilkel Hernandez pitches well on a day of rain outs across the system

June 14, 2024 by Bless You Boys

Scores, news, and notes, from around the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Thursday, June 13, 2024.

Toledo Mud Hens vs. Omaha Storm Chasers (postponed)

They were rained out in Toledo on Thursday. The series is tied up at a game apiece. They’ll play two on Friday night starting at 5:35 p.m. ET. LHP Bryan Sammons (4-3, 3.29 ERA) has been on a roll for the Hens. He’ll start Game 1.

If you missed it, here’s a short interview with Spencer Torkelson on getting sent down, and what he’s doing to work his way back.

Altoona Curve 2, Erie SeaWolves 0 (box )

Wilkel Hernandez pitched well on Thursday, but the SeaWolves couldn’t put any runs together as Altoona avoided losing three straight.

The SeaWolves got a one out double from Hao-Yu Lee in the first inning, but a pair of ground outs stranded him.

A pair of singles and a Ben Malgeri error led to a run for Altoona in the second inning. Eliezer Alfonzo and Brady Allen started the third with singles, but another pair of ground balls ended the inning with a ground out and then a double play ball.

Hernandez gave up his second run in the third on a single, a stolen base and a throwing error on Alfonzo on the play. Otherwise, Hernandez locked things down for six innings without allowing a walk and striking out seven.

In the sixth, Lee singled to lead off the inning and was wild pitched to second and then third. Still, they couldn’t get a run across despite seven hits and a walk to Altoona’s five hits and one walk on the night.

In the eighth, Lee was drilled in the helmet by a fastball. He appeared to be alright, but left the game.

Lee: 2-3, 2B

Alfonzo: 3-4

Hernandez (L, 2-3): 6.0 IP, 2 R, ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 7 K

Coming Up Next: It’s a 6:00 p.m. ET start on Friday night. Akron lost on Thursday as well, but Harrisburg won and so there’s a three-team tie atop the Eastern League’s Southwest division with nine games left in the first half and a playoff spot on the line.

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6, West Michigan Whitecaps 1 (box )

Joe Miller gave the Whitecaps a solid start, but the offense really struggled with Timber Rattlers starter K.C. Hunt. The right-hander struck out eight and one-hit the Whitecaps over six inning.

Miller allowed a two out double in the first inning, followed by a single and another double before he shut it down with two runs in. He then spun four more innings, allowing just two hits and two walks with no more scoring.

The ‘Caps got a leadoff walk to Jim Jarvis to open the bottom of the fourth. He was wild pitched to third with one out, but a pair of strikeouts stranded him. In the eighth, reliever Gabriel Sequiera was knocked around for three runs, and Yosber Sanchez for one more in a long inning. In the ninth, Jarvis walked and a pair of singles from Roberto Campos and Luke Gold plated the Whitecaps’ only run.

Max Anderson, Campos, Gold, and Peyton Graham each had a single, while Jim Jarvis walked twice. That was about it for the offense. The Whitecaps have largely been carried by Campos and Gold offensively, and no one else is making too much of an impact other than Seth Stephenson’s leadoff man stylings. They’ll be looking for a certain group of young hitters to get promoted for the second half to see a better offense.

Graham: 1-3, BB, K

Jarvis: 1-2, 2 BB, K

Miller (L, 0-1): 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 2 K

Coming Up Next: It’s a 6:35 p.m. ET start on Friday night with the Whitecaps down 1-2 in the series.

Lakeland Flying Tigers at Fort Myers Mighty Mussels (postponed)

That’s three straight days of torrential rain in south Florida. They’ll try to play two on Friday. Good luck.
