Who Is John Cena’s Opponent in Last Match of Career?

December 13, 2025 by Heavy

For John Cena, the last time is finally now, and it’s a blossoming pro wrestling superstar who gets the privilege of the future Hall of Famer’s final match.

Cena insists his match against Gunther on the Dec. 13 episode of WWE’s “Saturday Night’s Main Event” will be the final match of his 20-plus-year career. The two will square off in Washington, D.C., highlighting a four-match event on Peacock.

Cena will take on Gunther, aka Walter Hahn, who won a tournament to earn the final match against Cena. It’s arguably the highest-profile match for the 38-year-old, who is a two-time WWE world heavyweight champion and has WrestleMania experience, too.

John Cena’s Final Opponent, Gunther, Has Become WWE Star

Gunther made his main-roster WWE debut in 2022 after a quick but successful run in WWE’s developmental promotion, NXT. He quickly earned a reputation as not just one of the best technical wrestlers in WWE but one of the most talented all-around hands in all of pro wrestling. Multiple WWE legends, like Booker T and the Undertaker, have claimed Gunther is the best in the business right now.

At nearly 40, Gunther isn’t exactly an up-and-comer, but his late arrival on the main stage has kept him from truly ascending. Getting this chance, paired with his ability to get a great match out of just about anybody, sets “The Ring General” up for a major career achievement with Cena on Dec. 13.

There was talk that Cena-Gunther could open the show, but according to reports , it was still up in the air as of the day of the show, with the obvious possibility that it could also be the main event.

“Saturday Night’s Main Event” Card for John Cena Retirement Match

It’s possible Cena himself suggested he go on first and let the rest of the roster get the spotlight in a passing of the torch. In fact, Cena was the one who suggested the card also feature current NXT stars competing against main-roster stars.

Here’s the full card for “Saturday Night’s Main Event” on Peacock

Undisputed WWE champion Cody Rhodes vs. NXT champion Oba Femi

World tag team champions A.J. Styles and Dragon Lee vs. Je’Von Evans and TNX X Division champion Leon Slater

Bayley vs. Sol Ruca

Cena explained his thinking in a recent interview on Bill Simmons’ podcast.

“Beforehand, on a night I know people are going to be tuning in, we’re going to have it sold out, it’s going to be definitely a ticket you want to have in your hand, and that last piece of relevant energy I can get an audience member to tune in to,” Cena told Simmons, as transcribed by Wrestling Inc . “Show the future of your business.

“Have top name WWE superstars, CM Punk, Charlotte Flair, you put it together how you want, have them have non-canon exhibition matches with the future of the business. Bring kids up from ‘NXT.’ Get them in a building with real noise. Real energy. Let them get under the bright lights.”
