Troy Melton rocked in Toledo as Alex Cobb makes rehab appearance for the Hens

June 12, 2025 by Bless You Boys

Scores, news, and notes from around the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

Omaha Storm Chasers 6, Toledo Mud Hens 1 (box )

The Storm Chasers were supposed to be relatively easy prey, but they didn’t get the memo as they shut down the Hens lineup and cruised to their second straight victory in the series.

Hens pitching struck out 14 hitters in this game, but Troy Melton’s second outing did not go very well otherwise. The Detroit Tigers sent Alex Cobb out for his first rehab start with the Hens. He allowed a run in two innings of work, walking three hitters. Matt Manning spun a perfect third, and then they turned the game over to Melton for the bulk of the innings.

Melton quickly got in trouble by walking the leadoff hitter and a Cavan Biggio singled followed. After a sacrifice bunt, Luca Tresh tripled in both runs. In the sixth, Melton gave up a leadoff double before striking out the next two hitters swinging at a cutter—which is really a hard slider—and then a 99.9 mph fastball that blew the doors off of Peyton Wilson. However, Tresh stepped to the dish again and Melton fell behind 3-0 before trying to jam him with a fastball which got launched to center field for a two-run shot. Melton pitched into the eighth but allowed another run before turning the game over to Tyler Owens.

Ultimately it didn’t matter much because the offense did nothing after the first inning run they scored when Akil Baddoo doubled and scored on a Justyn-Henry Malloy single.

Malloy: 1-3, RBI, BB, K

Baddoo: 1-4, R, 2B, 2 K

Cobb: 2.0 IP, ER, H, 3 BB, 2 K

Melton (L, 0-2): 4.1 IP, 5 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 7 K

Coming Up Next: It’s a 7:05 p.m. ET start as the Hens look to avoid going down 3-0 in the homestand.

Erie SeaWolves 5, Altoona Curve 2 (box )

The SeaWolves made it two in a row over the Curve on Wednesday, and Kenny Serwa’s second Double-A start went well.

The knuckleballer tossed six innings of two-run ball, with one run earned over six innings of work. He struck out three and walked one. The Curve mounted a rally in the second and with one run in, a passed ball on Eduardo Valencia brought in the second run.

In the top of the fourth, the SeaWolves started their push. Trei Cruz led off with a single and then took second on a passed ball. A Max Anderson ground out moved Cruz to third, and he scored on a Thayron Liranzo ground out to cut the lead to 2-1 Curve.

Still, Serwa was doing really well to keep the Curve in check and they were unable to widen their lead again. In the top of the sixth, the SeaWolves struck again and took over the game for keeps.

Again it was Cruz sparking things as he walked with one out and stole second base. An Anderson triple scored Cruz, and a Liranzo singled plated Anderson for a 3-2 lead. Jake Holton doubled, and while Liranzo was thrown out trying to score on a Valencia ground out, singles from Justice Bigbie and Roberto Campos made it 5-2.

Troy Watson handled the seventh and eighth innings, while Matt Seelinger closed it out for the save.

Cruz: 1-2, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 SB

Anderson: 1-4, R, RBI, 3B, K

Serwa (W, 2-0): 6.0 IP, 2 R, ER, 4 H, BB, 3 K

Coming Up Next: It’s a 6:30 p.m. ET start as the SeaWolves look to make it three straight.

Lansing Lugnuts 4, West Michigan Whitecaps 3 (box )

The Whitecaps got out to an early lead but stalled out badly the rest of the game. A rare blow-up from Micah Ashman saw him blow a save as the Lugnuts gained a little ground on the first place ‘Caps.

With two outs in the first, Kevin McGonigle doubled to left and John Peck followed with a double of his own to score him. Ben Malgeri stepped to the dish in a rehab appearance and mashed a two-run shot. 3-0 lead. Easy game.

The problem is that the Whitecaps only collected five more hits in the game. Max Alba gave them a good start, but in his final inning he gave up a pair of runs to make it a 3-2 Whitecaps lead. CJ Weins handled the sixth and the seventh without issue.

From the 5th inning, thanks, @CoachTimK , on the tip as our crew has been busy tonight. Max Clark with a great catch in center. @jgoldstrass on the call. pic.twitter.com/pkQK1FyQoa

Ashman has been outstanding this season, but after a scoreless eighth, the leadoff hitter in the ninth reached on a swinging strike three as Archer Brookman couldn’t handle the pitch. Ashman hit the next batter and then threw away a sacrifice bunt to allow the tying run. They intentionally walked the next hitter to load the bases and give them a shot at a double play, but a routine ground out scored the go ahead run as the Lugnuts walked this one off.

Malgeri: 3-3, R, 2 RBI, HR

McGonigle: 1-3, R, 2B, BB, K

Alba: 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 2 K

Coming Up Next: It’s a 7:05 p.m. ET start on Thursday in Lansing.

Palm Beach Cardinals 7, Lakeland Flying Tigers 6 (F/10)(box )

The Flying Tigers battled back late in this one to take a lead into the bottom of the ninth, but a blown save sent them to extras.

Luke Stofel got the start and wasn’t at his best on Wednesday. He wasn’t helped by three errors from Samuel Gil at third base. Stofel allowed four runs, but only one was earned.

Ignacio Briceno took over in the fifth and he allowed a run as well. At that point it was 5-1 Palm Beach. Ricardo Hurtado’s solo shot in the third initially got the Flying Tigers on the board.

Finally in the top of the seventh the Flygers broke through. Cristian Santana led off with a single. Carlson Rucker walked with one out and a Gil single loaded the bases. Hurtado lined out and it wasn’t keep enough to right field to score Santana. However, he did score when Woody Hadeen was hit by a pitch. Franyerber Montilla singled in a run and then Jackson Strong, holding it down with Rainer gone, striped a bases clearing double to right field to make it 6-5 Lakeland.

Duque Hebbert handled the sixth and seventh innings without allowing a run, and Thomas Bruss followed suit in the eighth. Lefty Ethan Sloan took over in the bottom of the ninth to get the save, but he failed. A one-out walk and then a two-out double allowed the Cardinals to send this to the 10th.

Unfortunately a Stephen Hrustich ground out to first wasn’t enough to advance Santana to third, and Carson Rucker struck out. A balk did move to Santana to third, but Gil grounded out to end the inning. You know how this goes when you don’t score in the top of the 10th.

Sloan stayed out there looking for redemption, and he struck out Yordalin Pena to start things off well. However, a soft grounder to Franyerber Montilla saw everyone safe as he tried to get the lead runner heading to third. Sammy Hernandez ripped a single to left and that was the ballgame.

Strong: 2-5, 3 RBI, 2 2B, K

Montilla: 1-4, R, RBI, BB, K

Santana: 1-4, R, BB, K

Stofel: 4.1 IP, 4 R, ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 3 K

Coming Up Next: It’s a 6:30 p.m. ET start on Thursday night.
