Tigers 3, Guardians 0: El Mago magnifico on getaway day

July 25, 2024 by Bless You Boys

MLB: Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Guardians
Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Now let’s take a long break from the Guardians.

The Tigers finally concluded their series against the Guardians with a day game on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers used a bullpen day to make their exit while the Guardians called on Gavin Williams.

In the first, Colt Keith got a one-out walk, followed by a single from Justyn-Henry Malloy. Both baserunners were left stranded, though. In the home half with Tyler Holton on the mound, Jose Ramirez doubled, but they weren’t able to get him home.

Bligh Madris singled to start the top of the second. Then Jake Rogers got a one-out single. Javier Baez then homered to bring in three runs.

In the bottom half Jhonkensy Noel got a one-out double, but Cleveland couldn’t get him home.

The third was a 1-2-3 on both sides with Easton Lucas coming in to replace Holton for the third.

Madris singled to start the fourth, but a double play and strikeout eliminated his efforts. The Guardians went down in order in the home half.

Onto the fifth and Colt Keith got a two-out single, followed by a Malloy walk. Once again, they were both left stranded. Alex Faedo was the next out of the pen, and while he gave up a single to Andres Gimenez, a double play then safely ended the inning.

The sixth was another 1-2-3 for both teams.

In the seventh, Pedro Avila came out of the pen for the Guardians, and Wenceel Perez got a two-out single, but was not able to score. Jason Foley was the next reliever for the Tigers, and gave up a two-out double to Josh Naylor, but Andrew Chafin came in and got the final out to end the inning scoreless.

The Tigers went down in order in the top of the eighth. Brayan Rocchio was hit by a pitch in the home half, but a double play put an end to the threat.

Peter Strzelecki came in to hopefully hold the game over to give the Guardians one last chance. Bligh Madris continued to have himself a day, hitting a double, but three outs followed. Shelby Miller replaced Chafin in the bottom of the ninth. Jose Ramirez drew a two-out walk, and then advanced to second on defensive indifference. The next move he made was back to the dugout, however, as the Tigers clinched a getaway win.

Final: Tigers 3, Guardians 0
