Never!
Happy Friday, everyone! Another week of Tigers’ baseball is behind us, a new weekend series against the Reds will start tonight, and the Tigers are still leading the AL in wins. It’s a good time to be a Tigers fan!
But with that record comes expectations, and those expectations are another postseason run for Detroit. The question now: will the Tigers be going shopping ahead of the trade deadline? They’re down a starter now with Jackson Jobe on the IL, and the bullpen could always use a little something extra, so don’t be surprised if you see a lot of trade speculation news in the coming weeks.
Let’s just get right into it.
Detroit Tigers News:
- If you missed it last night, actor J.K. Simmons joined the Tigers’ broadcast crew and brought a lot of good luck with him.
- A little roster shuffling.
LHP Matt Gage has been selected today from Triple-A Toledo. RHP Beau Brieske was optioned to Triple-A following last night’s game.
Gage will wear uniform number 99.
To make room for Gage on the 40-man roster, RHP Jackson Jobe has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.

- The Athletic looked at teams that might go shopping for bats ahead of the trade deadline . Of the Tigers (who they ranked 5th in terms of potential urgency), they said:
And if that’s what they’re thinking about, there are possible avenues to improve, especially on the left side of the infield. Detroit is in the bottom five in baseball in offensive production out of shortstop, and your optimism for improvement there probably relies on Javier Báez continuing a rebound from three miserable seasons. Zach McKinstry has been terrific; his career OPS entering this season was .643, and compiling seven good months is harder than compiling two.
And in a different article over at The Athletic , Jim Bowden shared some of the rumblings he’s heard about trade match-ups. This is what he said of the Tigers:
The Tigers are for real. They’ll be aggressive at the trade deadline to bolster their bullpen and lengthen their lineup, with a power-hitting third baseman being their biggest need. Like the Mariners, a reunion with the Diamondbacks’ Suárez could be the best fit. Arizona could put Jordan Lawlar at third base to build for next year and let him work on his development in the majors in the second half of the season.
