The battle of the Centrals was a great weekend for baseball fans. But was it a World Series preview?
It was a great weekend to be a Tigers fan in Detroit, if you were lucky enough to get tickets to a game. This was one of the best weekends for the Tigers in terms of seat sales in a decade.
While the Tigers didn’t sweep the series (one that some people were suggesting might be a preview of this season’s World Series, even), they did win the series with two of three game wins. It was also a nice bounce back from a below-expectation visit to the White Sox, and should hopefully set the Tigers on the right path for the new week.
The team is off today before heading to Baltimore to face the Orioles, so let’s get into the news from the weekend, and get prepped for the week ahead!
Detroit Tigers News:
- It was a good weekend in Detroit.
Two of MLB’s best teams and fanbases came together this weekend, selling out Comerica Park for three straight days.
It’s the 2nd-highest attendance (121,509) for a three-game series in Detroit since 2015, topped only by last season’s playoff-clinching series vs. CWS.… pic.twitter.com/DiTD0lg0tk

- Umpire Doug Eddings didn’t make any friends on either side of the plate with his abysmal calls on Saturday afternoon . The calls were so bad Jon Heyman even suggested selective robo-umpire replacement. Yikes.
How about Robo umps in for a select few who have diminished sight? https://t.co/bY7rQpW9Ef

- Cody Stavenhagen takes us inside Comerica Park’s “smart cage.” ($) Here’s a little sneak peek into the article:
The centerpiece of the Tigers’ smart cage is the Trajekt Arc pitching machine. This technology is now used by at least 25 MLB teams. The machine, the brainchild of CEO Joshua Pope, projects an image of a pitcher’s delivery and can spit out a replication of a pitcher’s full arsenal, mimicking the near-exact release point, spin rate and movement of the pitch. The machines generally cost $15,000 to $20,000 a month as part of a three-year lease. McKinstry is one of the team’s most avid users, known to exaggerate or condense his open stance against lefties depending on how he’s feeling any given day.
