Scores, news, and notes from the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Friday, May 23, 2025.
Indianapolis Indians 4, Toledo Mud Hens 0 (box )
The Indians finally managed to smother the Hens offense to break their four game winning streak on Friday night.
Wilkel Hernandez has been excellent this season, but he got knocked around a little bit in this one. The right-hander gave up three runs over 5 1⁄3 innings.
Meanwhile the Hens managed just four singles and three walks, punching out a grotesque 14 times on the night.
PJ Poulin gave up a run in relief, while Ryan Miller spun two scoreless frames and Tyler Owens threw a scoreless ninth.
Workman: 2-4, K
Kreidler: 1-3, BB
Hernandez (L, 1-1): 5.1 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, BB, 2 K
Coming Up Next: It’s a 7:05 p.m. ET start with fireworks scheduled for the post-game on Saturday.
Erie SeaWolves 5, Hartford Yard Goats 4 (box )
The SeaWolves made it six straight victories on Friday night, but it took until the final out to do it.
Troy Melton returned to action from a nasty comebacker off his shin, and while it wasn’t his best outing, he struck out eight in 4 1⁄3 innings of work. He also allowed three earned runs on eight hits and a walk.
The SeaWolves struck first, as Carlos Mendoza was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the first. Max Anderson doubled to left, and it was 1-0 SeaWolves. The Yard Goats strung hits together in the second and third against Melton to take a 3-1 lead.

The SeaWolves started reeling them in with a Jim Jarvis RBI triple in the fifth, scoring Robert Campos who had singled earlier in the inning. Tim Naughton and Andrew Magno did a nice job out of the pen to pin the Goats down, and finally in the eighth the SeaWolves broke through again.

Mendoza led off and reached on an error on Hartford’s first baseman. Max Anderson and Thayron Liranzo singled, the latter plating Mendoza to tie the game at 3-3. An error and then a passed ball followed, allowing Anderson to score, and the SeaWolves had a 4-3 lead.

It couldn’t be easy, so Jordan Marks allowed a solo shot to Jose Cordova in the top of the ninth, tying things up again.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ben Malgeri led off with a single and took second on a wild pitch. Jarvis struck out, and Mendoza chopped a grounder to first that moved Malgeri to third. The Goats then chose to walk Max Anderson. That brought up Liranzo, who pulled a sharp ground ball to first base that was misplayed into a walkoff single.
Anderson: 2-3, R, RBI, 2B, 2 BB, K
Liranzo: 3-5, 2 RBI
Melton: 4.1 IP, 3 ER, 8 H, BB, 8 K
Coming Up Next: The SeaWolves will look to keep the streak going at 6:05 p.m. ET on Saturday.
Great Lakes Loons 3, West Michigan Whitecaps 2 (box )
Kenny Serwa put up a good start, but the defense and the bats were not sharp on Friday night. It didn’t help that Max Clark and Kevin McGonigle had the night off. Meanwhile Josue Briceño was lifted from the game following the top of the sixth. Emily Waldon reports that the Tigers are just easing Briceño back into full-time work after coming off the IL.
The knuckleball stylist tossed five innings of two run ball, with one of them earned. He struck out four on the night.
Seth Stephenson singled and stole second in the first inning, and Peyton Graham did the same in the second, but both were stranded. Instead, the Loons scored two in the third with the help of a passed ball on Bennett Lee.
Three walks loaded the bases for the Whitecaps in the fourth, but Luke Gold flew out shallowly, and Abel Bastidas grounded out to end the inning. Finally in the sixth, Andrew Jenkins drew a leadoff walk and Graham doubled him home to get the ‘Caps on the board. They wasted a leadoff double and a walk in the seventh, but in the eighth Graham launched a solo shot, his first of the year, to tie the game.

Unfortunately, after Micah Ashman spun a clean eighth, he allowed a leadoff double in the ninth, and wild pitched the runner to third. An error on Graham on a ground ball allowed the run to score. The Whitecaps went in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Graham: 3-4, R, 2 RBI, 2B, HR
Serwa: 5.0 IP, 2 R, ER, 4 H, 0 BB, 4 K
Coming Up Next: The ‘Caps take a 2-1 series lead into Saturday’s 7:05 p.m. ET contest.
Lakeland Flying Tigers 6, Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 3 (box )
The Flying Tigers made it four straight on Friday with a somewhat wild but effective outing from lefty Gabriel Reyes leading the way.
Reyes struck out six and allowed just one hit in four innings of scoreless work. However, he also walked four on the night. The Mussels just couldn’t take advantage.
The Flying Tigers struck first when the Mussels walked Ricardo Hurtado and Nomar Fana with two outs in the second inning. Cristian Santana singled in Hurtado and then stole second base, but he and Fana were stranded.
In the fourth, Carson Rucker reached on an infield single but was forced at second by a ground ball from Hurtado. An error allowed Fana to reach and a wild pitch advanced them 90 feet. This time it was David Smith coming through with a two-run double to make it 3-1.
Reliever Ethan Sloan allowed a run in the top of the sixth, but in the bottom half, singles from Rucker and Fana, plus a walk to Santana, loaded the bases with one out. Woody Hadeen cleared the bases with a double to make it 6-1.
Thomas Bruss allowed a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but eventually shut it down.
Rucker: 3-4, R
Santana: 2-3, R, RBI, 2B, BB, K, SB
Hadeen: 1-3, 3 RBI, 2B, BB, K, SB
