Prospectus agrees that the Tigers have one of the top systems in the game, if not the best.
A major top 100 preseason prospect list came out on Tuesday as Baseball Prospectus’ top 101 prospects for 2025 was released. We tend to place Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, and FanGraphs above the rest of the national prospect rankings, although there are a few other good ones as well, including MLB Pipeline.
Baseball Prospectus has seven young Tigers’ ranked in the top 101 prospects in the game. Only the Tampa Bay Rays placed more prospects on the list, with nine total. Prospectus has Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony ranked as the top prospect in the game.
In no surprise, Jackson Jobe leads the way for the Tigers’ contingent as the fourth overall prospect in baseball, and the top ranked pitching prospect. The young right-hander got a brief look at the major leagues and the postseason last year, and will vie for a spot in the Detroit Tigers ’ starting rotation this spring. Armed with four pitches all plus or better when he’s locked in, the recently turned 22-year-old needs only to develop his command further to become one of the better pitchers in the game.
SS Kevin McGonigle checks in as the sixth ranked prospect in baseball. He is considered the top ranked shortstop prospect in the game by Baseball Prospectus. Like us, Prospectus seems to think he has a solid chance to stick at shortstop as well as being one of the best pure hitting prospects in the game.
Centerfielder Max Clark is ranked 31st, as the eighth best outfield prospect in the game. Anthony is obviously the top ranked outfielder, with the Nationals’ Dylan Crews and the Twins’ Walter Jenkins checking is second and third among outfielders.
Shortstop Bryce Rainer ranks 56th overall, and the 12th best shortstop prospect.
Catcher Thayron Liranzo ranks 58th on the list, with fellow catching prospect Josue Briceño ranking 64th. Liranzo is considered the seventh best catching prospect in the game on this list. Briceño is ninth, and of course there’s more question about the latter’s abilty to thrive at the catcher position.
Finally infielder Jace Jung is ranked 97th overall. Infielder Hao-Yu Lee, who we also grade out well enough to be a top 100 prospect, didn’t make the list.
We’ll have the wait for more detailed commentary on the list from Baseball Prospectus to really see if they have any particularly interesting takes on Tigers’ players. Still, the growing consensus that the Tigers have one of the best farm systems in baseball is clear.
