The Seattle Seahawks – courtesy of attaining the first round bye in the playoffs – were able to sit and enjoy what was an excellent weekend of Wild Card round playoff football.
Having attained the #1 seed in the NFC, the Seahawks were always set to play the lowest ranked seed that proceeded past the Wild Card.
After the Green Bay Packers‘ implosion on Saturday – who would have been the Seahawks’ opponents if they had not surrendered an 18-point first half lead – the Seahawks will play the #6 seeded San Francisco 49ers, who caused a major upset when they beat the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.
And per the NFL’s release of the schedule for the weekend, the Seahawks will play on Saturday – either at 4.30 pm ET, or during the primetime 8pm ET slot.
Seahawks Set To Face Familiar Foe In Divisional Round
The Seahawks and the 49ers split their two divisional meetings in 2025. Ironically, the away team in both fixtures came out victorious, with San Francisco taking the first meeting on the first day of the season and Seattle winning the bout in Week 18 to secure the division title.
The Seahawks won a convincing 13-3 on January 3, in which the Niners were unable to make a dent into Seattle’s armor, either on the offensive or defensive side of the ball.
But anyone thinking that Seattle should or will cruise to victory on Saturday should think again. 49ers coach, Kyle Shanahan is one of the top postseason coaches in the NFL right now, and the team managed to successfully dismantle the heavily favored Eagles on Sunday.
However, the bookmakers do see this game as fairly one-sided – with the Seahawks being 7.5-point favorites in the bout.
Will Inexperience Hinder Seattle In The Playoffs?
The Seahawks are the least postseason battle-tested playoff team in the NFC, personnel wise. The team has played just one playoff game since the 2020 season, and head coach Mike McDonald has never been in charge of one, although he was the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens during their run to the AFC Championship Game in the 2023 season.
Just as importantly, quarterback Sam Darnold has just one playoff start – last season with the Minnesota Vikings , in which he and the Vikings fell in the Wild Card round to the Los Angeles Rams 27-9.
Darnold had a reputation for faltering in high pressure scenarios up until this season; he also did not play his best in Week 18 of the 2024 season, when the team lost to the Detroit Lions and surrendered them the opportunity to claim the #1 seed in the conference.
The Seahawks have been an unstoppable force in recent weeks, beating the Rams and Niners in riding a seven game winning streak pre-playoffs. But will that be enough to halt the know-how and postseason prowess of Shanahan and quarterback, Brock Purdy .
