Per Detroit Tigers’ beat writer Evan Petzold, Troy Melton, MLB Pipeline’s #10 prospect in the Tigers organization, will make his Major League debut Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Drafted in the fourth round out of San Diego State in 2022, Melton has been phenomenal so far during his eight appearances in Triple-A Toledo. In 36 1/3 innings, Melton has a 2.72 ERA and has recorded 56 strikeouts to just nine walks. Between Double-A and Triple-A this season, Melton has registered 101 strikeouts and 20 walks in 75 1/3 innings. He carries a fastball/changeup combo that has worked well at both levels.

Report: Tigers to Call Up Troy Melton
Help Wanted
Hard-throwing RHP Troy Melton will make his Major League debut on Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

The Tigers are in dire need of consistent elite-level starting pitching outside of reigning AL Cy Young winner, Tarik Skubal . This season, Skubal has seven games of 10+ strikeouts, while the rest of the starting staff has zero. While we don’t know what Melton will look like in MLB, he does carry a lot of promising strikeout ability.

Melton’s fastball grades out at 60, while his cutter/slider/curveball all grade out at 50. His fastball tends to sit in the mid-90s, but he has shown the ability to top out at 98 mph. His changeup is in the mid-80s, which can present a challenge for hitters if used effectively. However, his preferred putaway pitch is the slider, which also sits in the mid-80s and has a great chance to fool hitters. If all of his pitches are working in unison, he can become an elite pitcher. The one problem Melton has faced at Triple-A is the command of his fastball, which can leave home run pitches right over the heart of the plate.
Best Farm in Baseball
The Tigers quietly have one of the best farm systems in baseball, and Troy Melton is looking to prove that tomorrow afternoon in Pittsburgh. While also carrying the best record in the MLB, the Detroit Tigers also have the best record across all of their farm teams. While Casey Mize has been excellent this year for the Tigers, the team is still in search of a minor league pitcher to make an immediate impact at the big league level.

Troy Melton has the tools and the capabilities to be the future of the Tigers’ rotation alongside Casey Mize and Jackson Jobe . The only thing potentially holding Melton back from immediate success would be the long-ball issue. At Double-A, Melton allowed 13 of his 20 home runs to right-handed batters, with left-handed hitters mashing .325 off him with a .903 OPS.
He has settled down a bit in Triple-A, which has given the Tigers organization enough confidence to bring him in as a starter. There was some talk about him being a reliever in MLB, but with the pitch arsenal he carries, it makes too much sense to keep him out of the bullpen.
Looking Ahead
There is no word about this being a one-start opportunity for Melton, but with the trade deadline less than 10 days away, this could be the lone opportunity for the time being. With the Tigers looking destined for a deep playoff run, it might not be the worst thing in the world to throw out some rookies and allow for the veterans to rest, and Melton could be a great innings filler.
One can only imagine the Tigers will be uber-aggressive at the trade deadline, but maybe the only acquisition they need to make is in-house.
