Rams’ McVay Gives First Impressions On Recently Acquired DB

November 4, 2025 by Heavy

One of the main weaknesses of the Los Angeles Rams entering the 2025 NFL season was the secondary room, specifically the cornerback position.

The Rams attempted to acquire an elite CB, including former player Jalen Ramsey, but failed to do so. Despite not having a true number one cornerback on defense, Los Angeles has one of the best records in the league and is tied for the best record in the NFC.

The team was hit with a bit of bad luck at the beginning of the season, as the most experienced cornerback on the roster, Ahkello Witherspoon, suffered a broken collarbone that sidelined him for three months.

To help combat the lack of a serious corner to cover the opposing team’s primary receiver, the Los Angeles Rams pulled the trigger on a trade for former Tennessee Titans cornerback Roger McCreary for a conditional 2026 fifth-round pick.

McCreary is a promising young talent in the final year of his rookie contract. In his rookie season with the Titans, the new Rams corner recorded 8 pass deflections and 84 total tackles. During his time in Nashville, McCreary logged 17 pass deflections, 3 interceptions and 253 combined tackles.

Now on a Super Bowl contender, McCreary made his debut for the Rams, but only played special team snaps as he is still getting accustomed to his new team.

Roger McCreary played 11 snaps in his debut for his new team, all of them on special teams and did not record a tackle or any other statistic.

It takes some time for players who are traded in the middle of the season to get used to the new defensive scheme, which is why McCreary didn’t get an opportunity to play on the defensive side of the ball.

“I like his vibe. I like his approach. I like the way he went about his practice rhythm and routine getting up to speed. He’s a really smart guy,” head coach Sean McVay said about the cornerback, via the Sean McVay Show .

“He was working at the outside corner [spot]. He, obviously, [will] start to get a chance to be able to have some inside and outside flex for us. Thought he brought overall athleticism, speed and urgency to our perimeter play on special teams… I liked his vibe throughout the week. He’s really smart [and] conscientious. We’re grateful to grand him on board.”

McCreary will likely make his defensive debut for the Rams in the Week 10 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers .

No More Additions To The Secondary

The 2025 NFL trade deadline has now officially passed, with the Rams having not making any moves in the closing hours.

The current group of players on the 53-man roster, practice squad, injured reserves and any surprise signings will be what defensive coordinator Chris Shula will work with.

Los Angeles wasn’t linked to any cornerbacks before the deadline, but surprise trades always happen out of nowhere.

The Rams have a 6-2 record in a close NFC West, with the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks both having 6 wins as well.

LA not adding a true CB1 at the deadline can bite the team later in the season if things go wrong.
