Organizational sweep goes the wrong way for the Tigers’ farm

Toledo Mud Hens at Indianapolis Indians (postponed)

Game 1 of this set was rained out on Tuesday evening. Keider Montero was scheduled to start, so presumably he’ll get the ball tomorrow, moving Brant Hurter to Thursday, when they’ll play a day doubleheader to make up this one.

Harrisburg Senators 5, Erie SeaWolves 1 (F/7)(box )

Carlos Peña was knocked around pretty badly early in this one by a strong Senators offense featuring Dylan Crews, Brady House, and Robert Hassell III. The SeaWolves weren’t able to mount a comeback before the rains came and forced this one to go into the books officially after seven innings.

The Senator scratched out a run in the bottom of the first, and a leadoff single from Jake Holton, plus two wild pitches by Harrisburg’s Lucas Knowles, got him to third. Jake Holton singled him home to tie the game, but Eliezer Alfonzo grounded into a double play to squander the chance at a rally, and they were never in reach of the lead again.

Peña allowed the Senators to load the bases in the bottom half of the inning, and they scored four run, with a bases clearing triple from Andrew Pinckney the big blow of the inning. House would be ejected on a checked swing call later in the inning, but it didn’t help the SeaWolves.

After Carlos Mendoza was reported on the MiLB transaction wire as moving up to Toledo, here he was in Harrisburg playing for the SeaWolves in this one. Not sure what happened there. Anyway, Mendoza had one of the SeaWolves four singles. Holton had two. Pretty meager performance all around.

Peoria Chiefs 1, West Michigan Whitecaps 0 (box )

The Marlins and Tigers weren’t the only ones struggling to score runs on Tuesday. Colin Fields pitched well for the Whitecaps, but they managed only five hits and four walks on the day.

The Whitecaps should’ve taken an early lead in this one, but they blew it. Seth Stephenson started the game with a double to right field. Max Anderson struck out but Stephenson stole third base. Luke Gold walked, but was then thrown out trying to steal second base, and Cole Turney struck out.

In the third, Peyton Graham got hit by a pitch and stole second base. Dom Johnson struck out but Stephenson walked to turn it over to Anderson and Gold again. A strikeout and a pop-up ended that opportunity. And so it went…

Meanwhile, Fields allowed just a bloop single in the first inning, and that runner was promptly erased by Gold trying to take second on the play. Otherwise, Fields struck out three and didn’t allow a baserunner.

Chris Mauloni allowed a solo shot in the sixth inning, and despite getting three-hit by Fields, Mauloni, and Michael Bienlien, without a walk allowed, the Chiefs held on to win with a little help from their defense.

Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 11, Lakeland Flying Tigers 8 (box )

The Flying Tigers built a big early lead and watched their bullpen crumble the rest of the way to lose this one.

The Flying Tigers got right to work in the first despite Josue Briceño getting the day off. Kevin McGonigle started the bottom of the first with a single, was replaced by Max Clark who grounded into a force of McGonigle, and then stole second and rode home on Luis Santana’s first home run of the season.

Brett Callahan followed with a single and stole second, scoring on a Samuel Gil single. Gil then repeated the process, stealing second and scoring on a Jim Jarvis single. Jarvis then stole second base as well. Archer Brookman broke the pattern with a walk, but David Smith doubled home Jarvis to make it 5-0 after one inning.

Santana singled and scored on a Callahan double in the second to make it 6-0. This was the double.

Joe Adametz gave the Flying Tigers three good innings of scoreless work, but in the fourth, an error and a single led to a three-run homer that cut Lakeland’s lead in half. Adametz allowed another run in the fifth, and it was 6-4 Flying Tigers when the bullpen took over.

Blake Pivaroff allowed a run in the sixth, and in the seventh, Carlos De Los Santos was shelled for five runs, included a pair of homers. Patrick Pridgen took over and allowed one run of his own before finally escaping the seventh, but it was now 11-6 Fort Myers.

The Flying Tigers made one last push in the bottom of the seventh. Samuel Gil doubled with one out and Jarvis walked. Another David Smith double scored them both to make it 11-8, but they never got any closer.
