If Younghoe Koo’s botched field goal attempt baffled you last night, with the New York Giants kicker stubbing his toe into the ground instead of the ball, then you were not alone.
On a night where just about nothing went right for the Giants, special teams was a house of horrors for New York at Gillette Stadium. The lowlight of the night came on Younghoe Koo’s complete whiff on the football that had multiple NFL legends in complete shock.
Victor Cruz, Manning Brothers React Live To Koo’s Botch
ESPN’s SportsCenter Instagram account posted a clip of the play last night, causing former Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz to comment, saying, “I just threw my drink across the room.”
He was not the only NFL legend to share their live reaction to the play, with Peyton and Eli Manning live on ESPN2 for their weekly “ManningCast” of the Giants-Patriots game on Monday Night Football.
Peyton Manning was the first to react, saying that “The kicker tripped trying to kick the field goal, he tripped trying to kick the field goal.” He continued, “I have not seen that … ever.”
Famous actor Danny DeVito had joined the broadcast as a guest and expressed similar sentiments, saying, “I’ve never seen that. I’ve never seen that.”
Peyton joked with Eli, saying, “Eli, it’s like one of your fat nine-irons you hit. It’s all grass,” prompting Eli to chime in by also saying, “I’ve never seen that. I’ve never seen that.”
Even Jaxson Dart rolled his eyes at the play, saying “Oh My God” as he turned away in disbelief. It had been that kind of night and season for the hapless Giants.
DeVito had the same reaction after watching the replay, saying on the air, “What the hell was that? Oh My God.”
For two Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks who have 33 years of combined NFL experience to say that they have never seen something like that means that what happened last night was truly unexpected and rare, even for those who have seen and played thousands of snaps of football.
Koo Explained The Bizarre Play After The Game
For a play that was so stunningly poor, Younghoe Koo had a relatively sensible explanation after the game. He said that his decision to kick the turf had to do with the movement of the ball as he approached it, which would have made it difficult for him to kick.
“I was approaching the ball, and cold weather, the ball kind of slipped out at the bottom so it was moving,” Koo said . “I wasn’t able to kick through the ball. The ball was moving when I was driving to it, so I just pulled up on it.
“Jamie did a good job of catching it and putting it back, but at that point, it was too late,” Koo finished.
Gillan also did a good job of improvising after Koo had whiffed on the attempt, rolling out and attempting to pick up the first down with his legs, but was no match for the swarming Patriots , who were ready to tackle him for a 13-yard loss.
The play officially went down as a sack and not a missed field goal, since Koo never made contact with the ball. New York also allowed a punt return touchdown and saw Gunnar Olzewski get hammered on a punt return by New England’s Christian Elliss , saw Jaxson Dart take another big hit, and benched Abdul Carter again for nearly the entire first quarter.
The Giants fell to 2-11 on the season, extending their losing streak to seven games. New York will finally have its bye week before hosting the Commanders in a rematch of Washington’s 21-6 win over Big Blue back in Week 1.
