Mets Linked to 15-Home Run, Former All-Star Outfielder in Free Agency

December 23, 2025 by Heavy

The New York Mets are still trying to figure things out this offseason. After losing a chunk of their core (Edwin Diaz, Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo) and recently trading away utilityman Jeff McNeil, New York has a lot of production to replace, but that could come via new additions through the free agent market.

The team from Queens will continue to be linked to top free agent outfielders Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker as their free agencies progress, but the Mets could also make under-the-radar moves that could have a big impact in 2026. A recent report indicates the Mets are interested in outfielder Austin Hays.

Mets Linked to Free Agent Outfielder Austin Hays

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman recently reported that the New York Mets are showing interest in free agent outfielder Austin Hays. He had previously gained some interest from the Kansas City Royals, but then the Royals went out and acquired two outfielders.

For the Mets, acquiring an outfielder seems like a necessity at this point. Cody Bellinger remains at the top of the priority list, but that doesn’t mean he is the only player New York will add.

Austin Hays has been a solid outfielder over the past few seasons. He was named an All-Star back in 2023 with the Baltimore Orioles . In 2025 with the Cincinnati Reds, Hays hit 15 home runs and 16 doubles in 103 games. He slashed .315/.453/.768.

How Would Austin Hays fit in the Mets’ Outfield?

Although he’s been a fairly good defender over the course of his career, some of his underlying numbers suggest that the best defense is likely behind him, as Hays is now 30. David Stearn has been stern on the fact that the Mets are trying to improve their defensive ranks in 2026.

After losing the likes of Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil, the only two players that are listed as true outfielders on the Mets depth charts that aren’t free agents include Tyrone Taylor and Juan Soto.

Cedric Mullins signed elsewhere, and the Mets are still awaiting decisions by Starling Marte, Jesse Winker, and Jose Siri.

If they are unable to retain at least two of those names, the Mets absolutely would have to pursue a player like Austin Hays just to field a competent outfield group.

As other NL East rivals like the Braves and Phillies remain aggressive this hot stove season, the Mets must keep pace if they hope to become a top contender in the NL once again.
