New York Mets starting pitcher Freddy Peralta will be a free agent after the 2026 MLB season. The Mets traded away Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, two of their top prospects, to the Milwaukee Brewers to land the front-of-the-line starter. However, the question is whether they can keep him long-term.
With spring training nearing, Mets beat reporter Anthony DiComo of MLB.com shared his take and inside information regarding whether Peralta can stick around in Queens past this upcoming season.
“I think what people forget to realize sometimes is that it takes two to tango,” DiComo said on the Jan. 26 edition of “Baseball Night in New York.” “Freddy Peralta, who’s a year from free agency, who’s never pitched in New York before, probably doesn’t even know if he likes it, of course, because he hasn’t pitched here. He has to want to do it, too, and the Mets have to make it worth it as well. David Stearns doesn’t love paying players into their mid-30s.
“That’s what he would have to do for Peralta in an extension. So these are all reasons why it doesn’t necessarily have to happen, but it absolutely could. I think if you’re the Mets, you do give up those prospects. There is some motivation, at least, to explore it. These conversations tend to happen in March. You get down to spring training, everyone’s in the same place.”
What Could a Freddy Peralta Contract Extension Look Like?
Moreover, DiComo noted that if any Mets fan is hopeful that New York can reach an extension with Peralta, he cited the contract that Tyler Glasnow received from the Los Angeles Dodgers .
“The numbers that I have in my head are on top of this year, four years, $120 million,“ DiComo added. “That’s about what Tyler Glasnow got. He was in a very similar situation, aged 30, wasn’t as healthy as Peralta has been, maybe some better stuff than Peralta has.
“But you take what he got, it was around $112 million of new money. Tack on a million per AAV. That’s what you’ll be looking at in a Peralta extension. But again, I think that’s where the Mets would want to go. If I’m Peralta, I probably say, I want a fifth year, and that’s where the negotiations.”
Mets Now Have a No. 1 Starter in Freddy Peralta
Peralta is a two-time All-Star who just turned in the strongest year of his career, finishing with a 2.70 ERA over 176 2/3 innings in 33 starts. With the Mets now having their No. 1 starter, SNY’s Jerry Blevins shared his thoughts on what the former Brewers standout brings to Queens.
“This is great,“ Blevins said on Jan. 21 . “He brings true front-end talent. This guy is durable. He knows how to last long into a game, and more importantly, into a season. This is what has been lackluster.
“This is what the downfall of the first real signs of struggle for the Mets last season was none of their starters could get them to that fifth inning, even the fourth inning at times; this is what Freddy Peralta does.”
