Kevin McGonigle walks it off for Erie; Jaden Hamm rehabs in Flying Tigers victory

July 23, 2025 by Bless You Boys

Scores, news, and notes from around the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

Indianapolis Indians 7, Toledo Mud Hens 1 (box )

Wilkel Hernandez’s outing was decent, but there wasn’t much the pitching staff could do as the Hens managed just five hits on the night.

Hernandez allowed a baserunner in every inning, but he kept the Indians off the board until the fifth. There he allowed three straight singles and two runs before giving way to right-hander RJ Petit, who was promoted from Double-A today. Petit rarely gives up home runs, but his second pitch at the new level was a 1-0 slider at the bottom of the zone, and it was golfed out to left by Billy Cook for a two-run shot. 4-0 Indy.

Petit got the next two outs, and Justyn-Henry Malloy led off the top of the sixth with a solo shot to left field, but Matt Manning allowed a run in the sixth. Tanner Rainey gave up two more in the eighth, and that was that.

Akil Baddoo was on base three times, while Kerry Carpenter went 1 for 4 with a strikeout in his first rehab game.

Baddoo: 1-2, 2 BB, SB

Malloy: 1-3, R, RBI, HR, BB, 2 K

Hernandez (L, 3-5): 4.1 IP, 3 ER, 8 H, 0 BB, 4 K

Coming Up Next: It’s a 7:05 p.m. ET start on Wednesday night.

Erie SeaWolves 4, Somerset Patriots 3 (F/10)(box )

Kevin McGonigle was the hero in this one with a walkoff single in the 10th as the SeaWolves took down the Patriots on Tuesday night.

Carlos Pena got the start and the lefty was his usual effective self. He allowed a two-out double and then a walk in the fourth, but got a ground ball to McGonigle that was missed played into an unearned run, but otherwise Pena departed with his team in good shape.

Richard Guasch took over and allowed a two-run shot in the fifth for a 3-0 Patriots lead. Guasch got himself dialed back in after collecting himself, and struck out the side all swinging in the sixth.

The SeaWolves answered in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out rally. Jake Holton drew a walk and singles from Roberto Campos and Jim Jarvis made it a 3-1 Somerset lead. Chris Meyers cracked a solo shot in the seventh to make it 3-2, and in the eighth, Max Clark walked, stole second, and scored on a Josue Briceño single to tie the game.

Lefty Micah Ashman debuted for Erie in this one after the Detroit Tigers promoted him from West Michigan, and he looked good as usual with two scoreless frames of relief and three punchouts. Tanner Kohlhepp handled the ninth, striking out two but walking two as well.

Holton led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and it looked like the SeaWolves had a walkoff win in the bag, but Campos grounded out to shortstop and Holton couldn’t advance. Jarvis grounded out as well, and Clark struck out to send it to the 10th.

Andrew Magno did a nice job stranding the Manfred runner in the top of the inning, and with Clark starting the bottom of the 10th on second base, a McGonigle single to center field was all it took to send the fans at UPMC Park home happy.

Coming Up Next: It’s a 1:05 p.m. ET start in Erie on Wednesday.

West Michigan Whitecaps 6, Peoria Chiefs 5 (box )

The Whitecaps continue to roll despite losing their three best players. They made it four in a row since the break with a victory over the Chiefs on Tuesday.

The ‘Caps opened the scoring in the second when Izaac Pacheco led off with a single and Austin Murr followed with his sixth home run of the year.

That 2-0 lead immediately disappeared in the bottom half as Hayden Minton allowed a two-run shot as well. Minton struggled with his control in this one overall, and he crumbled in the fourth, allowing three runs and a 5-2 Chiefs lead.

The Whitecaps fought right back in the top of the fifth. Andrew Jenkins launched a solo shot to start the inning. Patrick Lee reached on an error and stole second base before Seth Stephenson singled Lee home. Peyton Graham singled, and a grounder from John Peck forced Graham at second, but got Stephenson to third. Stephenson and Peck then pulled off the delayed double steal, with Stephenson stealing home to tie the game at 5-5.

As has been the case all year, the Whitecaps bullpen was a big part of this victory. Lefty Micah Ashman was promoted to Double-a Erie on Tuesday, but there’s plenty more where he came from. Carlos Lequerica, CJ Weins, and Dariel Fregio each went more than an inning of scoreless relief to pin the Chiefs in place.

The Whitecaps finally took control in the eighth. Garrett Pennington doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a Murr double. Blair Calvo closed it out for the save.

Coming Up Next: It’s a 7:35 p.m. ET start on Wednesday.

Lakeland Flying Tigers 7, Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 3 (box )

The Flying Tigers lost a lead in this one and then roared back with a big four-run eighth inning to take the first of six on Tuesday.

Jaden Hamm made his first rehab start in this one, and allowed a run in the second inning. In the fourth, the Flying Tigers fought back. Carson Rucker, finally getting hot after a rough start to the season, doubled with two outs. Stephen Hrustich singled him in and took second on the play. A Junior Tilien single made it 2-1.

In the fifth, Zach MacDonald led off with a walk and was singled to third by Samuel Gil. A Jackson Strong sacrifice fly brought the run in for a 3-1 lead.

Zack Lee took over from Hamm and threw six innings of two-run ball. He allowed two runs in the sixth that tied the game, but he settled back in for the seventh and eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, Strong, Ricardo Hurtado, and Rucker singled in order to start the inning. A Hrustich sacrifice fly plated Strong, and Tilien singled in Hurtado. That made it 5-3 Lakeland, and Cristian Santana then reached on an error, plating Rucker. A MacDonald ground out brought home Tilien, and the lead was 7-3.

Ethan Sloan handled the ninth without issue.

Rucker: 2-4, 2 R, 2B, K

Tilien: 2-4, R, 2 RBI, K

Gil: 2-5, SB

Hamm: 2.0 IP, ER, 3 H, 2 BB, K

Zack Lee (W, 6-3): 6.0 IP, 2 ER, H, 3 BB, 3 K

Coming Up Next: The 57-30 Flying Tigers just continue to dominate. They’ll get back at it on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
