Jackson Jobe dominates for Erie, Thayron Liranzo cracks two homers for West Michigan

August 14, 2024 by Bless You Boys

Scores, news, and notes from around the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

Charlotte Knights 3, Toledo Mud Hens 1 (box )

Casey Mize cruised through his rehab outing and Spencer Torkelson went yard but the rest of the offense was quiet as the Knights took the first of six in Charlotte.

Mize looked good. He went 3 1⁄3 innings, allowing just a hit, a walk, and one hit batter, with three strikeouts. Torkelson opened the fourth inning with a drive to left field on a 93.8 mph fastball up on the inner edge of the zone.

Austin Schulfer allowed a pair of runs in the fifth, and Miguel Diaz gave up another in the seventh. The Hens only managed four hits and just couldn’t get anything going.

Erie SeaWolves 6, Akron RubberDucks 1 (box )

Jackson Jobe blanked the RubberDucks for six innings, and the offense got hot late to run away with this one.

Jobe cruised, throwing 52 of 75 pitches for strikes. He only punched out two, but he also allowed just three singles and no walks. Two of those hits came from Chase DeLauter, the other really high end prospect in this one, who singled twice.

Both teams were held scoreless until the sixth when Carlos Mendoza singled with two outs and stole second base. Hao-Yu Lee ripped a double to left field to score him.

In the eighth, Lee singled with one out and Gage Workman reached on catcher’s interference. Chris Meyers singled in Lee and Trei Cruz singled in Workman to make it 3-0. Luis Santana followed with a walk and after an Eliezer Alfonzo grounder that saw Meyers cut down at home, Ben Malgeri came up with a two run single and then a wild pitch brought Alfonzo home to make it 6-0.

Lee: 3-4, R, RBI, 2B, CS

Cruz: 2-4, R, RBI, K

Jobe (W, 3-1): 6.0 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 2 K

West Michigan Whitecaps 9, Lansing Lugnuts 3 (box )

Thayron Liranzo had another huge game for the Whitecaps as Izaac Pacheco returned from a long rehab assignment in Lakeland with a bang.

Mason Englert started for West Michigan, allowing a run in 2 1⁄3 innings of work.

It was 1-0 Lansing in the top of the third when the Whitecaps got things going. Patrick Lee, Seth Stephenson, and Max Clark singled in order to start the inning. Max Anderson grounded into a force of Lee at home, but Liranzo walked to push Stephenson home and tie the game. A Roberto Campos sacrifice fly scored Clark, and a Pacheco singled scored Anderson to make it 3-1.

The Whitecaps wasted a Jim Jarvis leadoff double in the top of the fourth. In the bottom half, Joe Adametz allowed a run to make it 3-2 Whitecaps.

Max Anderson singled to open the fifth, and Liranzo blasted a two-run shot to right field to make it 5-2.

Adametz went five innings to handle the bulk of the innings, allowing two runs, one earned. It was 5-3 heading into the top of the ninth. Liranzo crushed a solo shot with one out, and the Whitecaps went on to score four in the inning to put this one away.

Liranzo: 4-4, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2 HR, BB

Patrick Lee: 4-5, 3 RBI, 2B, K

Pacheco: 3-5, RBI, 2B, K

Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 6, Lakeland Flying Tigers 2 (box )

Gabriel Reyes wasn’t at his sharpest in this one. The lefty allowed a single, hit a batter, and then allowed a three-run shot in the second inning. A walk, a pair of doubles, and an error behind him plated three more for the Mussels in the fifth. He only allowed four hits and a walk, striking out five, but it was all or nothing in this outing.

Meanwhile, Lakeland pounded out 11 hits and just could not push any runs across. Finally in the eighth, John Peck and Franyerber Montilla singled and Peck scored on a balk. Eduardo Valencia singled Montilla to third, and Dom Johnson lifted a sacrifice fly to score him.
