With spring training here, there is optimism abounding in 30 Major League cities. Now, legit or not, every fanbase needs reasons to be excited at the start of the baseball season. Some teams are easier to come up with reasons than others, but we are going to come up with at least one totally sincere reason for each team to be excited heading into the 2026 Major League Baseball season. This is … hope springs eternal … American League Central edition.
Chicago White Sox: Hey, Big Spender
The Chicago White Sox have lost 101+ games each of the last three seasons, including a record 121 losses in 2024 . On the bright side, last year’s 101 defeats were a 19-game improvement. With some decent young talent like Colson Montgomery , Kyle Teel , and Shane Smith , this team has some hope in the AL Central. Most pleasantly, the White Sox were decent spenders this offseason. They splurged for Japanese power bat Munetaka Murakami , closer Seranthony Dominguez , outfielder Austin Hays , and veteran lefty starter Sean Newcomb . These moves don’t make the South Siders the AL Central favorites. However, they do represent a shift in culture from the previous three dreadful years. When you combine this modest amount of spending and some evolving youngsters, there is a reason for optimism if you support the White Sox.
Cleveland Guardians: Love Him Up
For the most part, in this series for each team, I’ve tried to avoid the most obvious reason for optimism. But … I couldn’t help myself with the Cleveland Guardians : Jose Ramirez . This do-everything-for-your-team third baseman is probably the least heralded star in the MLB. We could reel off his resume all day, but let’s just spotlight a few superlative stats. Since 2017, Ramirez has eight top-10 or better finishes in AL MVP voting (26th all-time in MVP Shares ). His all-around play, energy, and charisma have helped Cleveland make the postseason seven times since 2016 with six AL Central crowns. With a career WAR of 57.6, he is eighth on the active MLB list (ahead of Francisco Lindor , Bryce Harper , and Jose Altuve ). As evidenced by Ramirez signing two team-friendly extensions , this guy loves being a Guardian, so Cleveland better love him up. Stating the obvious, having Ramirez on your team is a reason for optimism if you are a Guardians fan.
Detroit Tigers: Return of the Tiger King
The Detroit Tigers have returned to relevance largely due to the strength of their starting pitching. Now they’ve made a nostalgic acquisition to bolster that even more. By bringing back 43-year-old franchise legend Justin Verlander , the Tigers’ excitement should be magnified to a resounding roar. They are not getting the MVP/Cy Young version of JV , but he still brings a lot to the table for a fifth starter. Slotting him behind Tarik Skubal , Framber Valdez , Jack Flaherty , and Casey Mize makes a lot of sense. Kate Upton’s man started slow in 2025 , but he got progressively better over the last half of the season. More important than what he gives on the mound may be the wisdom he imparts to the rest of the staff. This move works like a cold beer and an ocean view. If this is indeed Verlander’s farewell tour, it’s another reason for optimism in Detroit.
Kansas City Royals: A Looming Franchise Milestone
Barring something unforeseen, a major Kansas City Royals record will fall this season. Franchise stalwart and affable Venezuelan, Salvador Perez , will become the all-time leader in home runs for the Royals. Salvy needs 15 homers to pass George Brett’s number of 317 . Perez has quietly been one of the best catchers in MLB history: 303 home runs, nine All-Star selections, nine seasons of 21+ dingers, five Gold Gloves, five Silver Sluggers, formerly the all-time single-season record for homers by a catcher , and a World Series MVP . He is already beloved in Kansas City, and will be immortalized when he passes another franchise luminary for a prestigious honor. Not only does Perez bring lots of joy to the Kansas City fans … he brings a reason for optimism if you follow the Royals in 2026.
Minnesota Twins: Something Different
I’m not going to lie: it was not easy coming up with a reason for optimism for the Minnesota Twins heading into the 2026 season. Last year, they lost 92 games and traded half of their roster at the deadline. They fired long-time manager Rocco Baldelli after the season . The new skipper for this AL Central squad is Derek Shelton . Shelton was the popular manager of the Pirates before being let go after a slow start in 2025 . If the Twins are looking for a change and a patient dugout boss, this guy fits the bill. After multiple 100-loss seasons in 2021 and 2022, he nurtured Pittsburgh to 76 wins in 2023 and 2024 with limited talent. The AL Central is not traditionally a powerhouse division, so Shelton and the Twins could turn things around faster than you think. There’s not a whole lot to be excited about if you’re a Twins fan right now, but the newly hired skipper is a reason for optimism in Minnesota.
