Hao-Yu Lee injured on a hit by pitch; Jake Holton walks it off for Erie

June 5, 2025 by Bless You Boys

Scores, news, and notes from the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

Columbus Clippers 5, Toledo Mud Hens 2 (box )

Lael Lockhart Jr. had a bit of rough outing and the offense was quiet in Columbus. The Clippers took advantage of a Hao-Yu Lee error to drop two on Lockhart in the first and then Jake Anchia led off the second inning with a solo shot. Lockhart settled down, but he allowed one more run in the fifth before departing the game.

The Hens got a run in the second when Jahmai Jones led off with a walk and moved to third on an Akil Baddoo single. A Ryan Kreidler ground out scored Jones, but though Brian Serven and Andrew Navigato walked to load the bases, Gage Workman struck out to strand them.

In the top of the third, Lee led off and promptly took an 89 mph sinker that got away from Clippers starter RHP Aaron Davenport right to the face. It looked like it got him on the bridge of the nose. Lee collapsed to the ground instantly and didn’t move for a couple of long moments before coming around and talking to the training staff. He was helped off the field bleeding from his nose. That was a scary one. Get well soon big fella.

Hopefully “just” a broken nose for Hao-Yu Lee. Looked bad, sounded worse, trainer still scraping blood out of the batters box before we resume play. Terrifying. pic.twitter.com/nYPrLuU2xc

Riley Unroe took over as the pinch-runner.

The Hens had a few baserunners, but just couldn’t string anything together. Matt Manning collected four outs and looked good, but Ricky Vanasco took over to start the seventh and immediately gave up a solo shot to Yordys Valdes.

In the ninth, Serven led off with a single and took second on a wild pitch. Gage Workman singled him in to make it 5-2, but that was as close as they’d get.

Serven: 2-3, R, BB

Workman: 1-3, RBI, BB, K

Baddoo: 1-3, BB, K, CS

Manning: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K

Lockhart (L, 2-4): 4.2 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 4 K

Coming Up Next: They’ll get it going again on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. ET with the Clippers up 2-0 in the road series.

Erie SeaWolves 7, Richmond Flying Squirrels 6 (box )

The SeaWolves had to fight back in this one after a rare rough night for the bullpen, but they made it two straight over the Squirrels with a walkoff victory on Wednesday night.

Joseph Montalvo got the start, and it was one of his best. The young right-hander fired six innings of one-run ball with three strikeouts while his teammates built a nice lead. The only run he allowed was a Carter Howell solo shot in the first inning.

The SeaWolves got the offense going in the middle innings. Chris Meyers led off the bottom of the third with a single and Trei Cruz doubled him in. Eduardo Valencia cracked a solo shot, his eighth homer, in the fourth. In the sixth, Robert Campos singled in Justice Bigbie, and the SeaWolves had a 3-1 lead.

It didn’t last long, however. Yosber Sanchez had a rare bad night, allowing a pair of solo shots and a third run in the seventh inning as the Squirrels seized a 4-3 lead. RJ Petit cleaned up the inning and then shut the Squirrels down in the eighth.

Bigbie led off the eighth with a single, and Valencia stepped to the dish and mashed his second homer of the game for a 5-4 lead.

The game continued to sway back and forth as Matt Merrill allowed a two-run shot in the top of the ninth. Now down a run, the SeaWolves would have to come back once again.

Trei Cruz striped his second double of the night to lead off and Max Anderson singled him to third. Thayron Liranzo tied the game with a single, and Jake Holton won it by spanking a grounder back through the box as Anderson raced around third as the game winning run.

Valencia: 3-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 HR, K

Cruz: 4-5, R, RBI, 2 2B

Anderson: 2-5, R

Bigbie: 2-3, 2 R, BB

Montalvo: 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 3 K

Coming Up Next: It’s a 6:05 p.m ET start time on Thursday.

Lake County Captains 4, West Michigan Whitecaps 1 (box )

The Whitecaps winning streak ended at nine games on Wednesday. They got a solid start out of Hayden Minton, but for one night the bats were quiet.

Minton struck out four in four innings of work. He walked one, allowing just a lone run in the fourth. Haden Erbe did not do so well, giving up a two-run shot in the sixth.

Captains’ right-hander Dylan DeLucia acquitted himself very well as he one-hit the fearsome Whitecaps offense over five innings with eight strikeouts.

Finally in the seventh, Peyton Graham singled and scored on a rocket of a triple to center field off the bat of Patrick Lee. 3-1 Lake County.

That was all they’d get as Archer Brookman popped out, Max Clark walked, and Kevin McGonigle struck out to end the inning.

CJ Weins allowed a run in the top of the ninth on Jonah Advincula’s second home run of the game. The Whitecaps went in order in the bottom half.

Graham: 2-4, R, K

Lee: 1-4, RBI, 3B, 2 K

Minton (L, 0-1): 4.0 IP, ER, 4 H, BB, 4 K

Coming Up Next: The ‘Caps will look to start a new winning streak at 6:35 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Daytona Tortugas 6, Lakeland Flying Tigers 5 (box )

Luke Stofel gave the Flying Tigers a good start, but the Tortugas matched him and their bullpen held up just a little better than Lakeland’s did.

Stofel scattered four hits and didn’t walk a batter over five scoreless frames, striking out three. He got a little help from his defense.

So it was a 0-0 game until the Flying Tigers broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning. An error was crucial, as Samuel Gil reached on a grounder to third with two outs in the inning. Jose De La Cruz doubled him in, then scored on a Woody Hadeen triple. Franyerber Montilla served a single up to score Hadeen for a 3-0 lead before being caught stealing second to end the inning.

Chris Williams Jr. gave up a run in the sixth to make it 3-1, but it was a brutal inning from Thomas Bruss in the top of the eighth that sank Lakeland this one. He issued a leadoff walk, hit the next batter, and walked the third to load the bases. A single followed and then another hit by pitch. Bruss then couldn’t handle a comebacker, and so it went as the Tortugas scored five runs to seize a 6-3 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Flying Tigers did make a bid at a comeback. Ricardo Hurtado and Gil singled to start things off, but De La Cruz struck out. Hadeen reached on an infield single to load the bases, but Montilla struck out. However, Jackson Strong singled up the middle to score Hurtado and Gil and pull them within a run of the lead. Stephen Hrustich popped out to end it.

Hadeen: 2-5, R, RBI, 2B, BB

De La Cruz: 2-3, R, RBI, 2B, BB, K

Strong: 1-5, 2 RBI

Stofel: 5.0 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 3 K

Coming Up Next: The series is tied at a game apiece with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. ET on Thursday.
