So, apparently is WAS the oblique. Grand.
New Detroit Tigers ’ second baseman Gleyber Torres has been placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to March 29th with a left oblique strain. Justyn-Henry Malloy has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo in his stead.
Torres clearly felt the injury after hitting a solo home run in third inning of Friday night’s loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers . He reached for his side as he jogged the bases, and while he initially stayed in the game defensively, the Tigers pulled him out of the game the next inning.
Reports after the game indicated that Torres had been dealing with some soreness in the area for at least a few days prior to aggravating on the home run swing. However, this was initially described as discomfort in his ribs rather than a potential oblique injury. The oblique was the obvious fear, and as it turns out, that was correct diagnosis.
The Tigers hoped sitting him on Saturday, along with the off day to travel to Seattle on Sunday, would help resolve the issue. Unfortunately that was not the case, and so right out of the gate the Tigers are missing Parker Meadows, Matt Vierling, and Gleyber Torres, along with their two top depth outfielder in Wenceel Pérez and at Triple-A, Akil Baddoo.
Not the way they hoped to start the year. The Tigers have a really tough schedule in April, and it’s going to be tough to hang in there with three of their six best bats, in an offense that was already a pretty average unit, already on the shelf.
They’ll get started in Seattle this evening looking to get the taste of the Dodgers sweep out of their mouths. Some hitters are going to have to step up.
Malloy nearly made the team out of camp and continued to swing the bat well in the Toledo Mud Hens first series. He and Spencer Torkelson can share first base and the designated hitter spot while Colt Keith moves back to second base from first base as long as Torres is on the shelf.
