After taking Game 1 from San Diego, Detroit can win the series over one of the best teams in the league.
The Detroit Tigers took the opening game of their home series against the San Diego Padres on Monday night, 6-4 , to get the good guys back on the winning track. What is more impressive is that the Pads are one of the best teams in baseball, but not better than the Tigers that night.
Now, AJ Hinch’s squad has a chance to clinch the middle series of their 10-game homestand on Tuesday night inside Comerica Park. With a slim half-game lead in the American League Central, Detroit needs to keep winning to fend off the charging Cleveland Guardians .
The Tigers turn to Jack Flaherty to make the start opposite seasoned veteran Nick Pivetta on Tuesday night. Here is a look at how they match up.

Jack Flaherty looks to bounce back
Flaherty’s last outing against the Milwaukee Brewers was his first hiccup of the year, allowing three runs on five hits (including a home run) and two walks while striking out four in just 4 2⁄3 frames for the loss. It was only the second dinger allowed and his fewest innings pitched so far.
Nick Pivetta looks to continue strong start
The nine-year veteran has been lights out in three of his four starts so far in 2025 with one hiccup mixed in there. That sour outing came at the Chicago Cubs his second time out, in which he surrendered three runs on six hits — including his only home run allowed so far — and three walks while striking out four.
In the other three games he has thrown quality starts, tossing six innings or more while allowing just a single run across 20 frames. Pivetta struck out a season-high 10 batters against the Colorado Rockies two games ago.
