Detroit took the first two of a three-game series from New York earlier this week. Can finish they job?
The Detroit Tigers are streaking early on in the 2025 campaign, having won five straight games and seven of their last eight after beating the New York Yankees on Tuesday afternoon, 5-0 .
AJ Hinch’s crew has shaken off a season-opening sweep at the Los Angeles Dodgers to earn wins in three consecutive series since. Having already given the Chicago White Sox the broom treatment, the Olde English D can also give the boot to another much-hated American League franchise.
But it will not be easy for the Tigers despite sending Jack Flaherty — who has looked good so far this spring — to the mound. The Yankees are sending an ace of their own to the bump in newly acquired Max Fried, who has had mixed results so far in the Bronx.
Below is a look at how the two match up ahead of the final game of Detroit’s six-game homestand.

Flaherty’s first two starts back in Detroit have gone well, though the overall results have been split. In his 2025 season debut, the right-hander allowed two runs on three hits (including a two-run homer) and two walks while striking out five over 5 2⁄3 innings; he did not figure in the team’s loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers that day.
The 29-year-old looked even better against the Chicago White Sox in his second appearance, once again going 5 2⁄3 frames while allowing just one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out seven. This time, Flaherty got the W for his efforts as the Tigers prevailed.
Fried is in his first season with the Yankees after spending the first eight years of his MLB career with the Atlanta Braves . His results so far with the Bronx Bombers have been bipolar, mixed between a rough debut and a strong bounce back in his second game.
The 31-year-old only lasted 4 2⁄3 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers after surrendering six runs — but only two earned — on seven hits and a pair of walks while striking out four. Against the Pittsburgh Pirates , Fried fired off 5 2⁄3 frames of one-run ball on six hits (including a solo home run) and a walk while striking out six.
