There are some excellent ones to choose from.
Baseball is a lingo-heavy game. There are roughly 100 different phrases an announcer might pull out to describe a home run, and even more to colorfully contextualize a catch (ice cream cone, anyone?) or a throw (frozen rope!).
With so many options to choose from, everyone is bound to have a favorite. Something that just tickles them whenever they here it on a broadcast, or it gets mentioned in an article. My personal favorite isn’t even about on-field play, it’s about bench-clearing brawls: donnybrook.
So think long and hard about the lingo that gets you pumped up in a game or the phrases that make you giggle (golden sombrero? grand salami?) And maybe ask why so many of these are related to meat?
This idea was borrowed from a wonderful Twitter thread posted earlier this week by Baseball History Nut, so credit where credit is due. Now tell us your favorites below! I’m curious to see if there are any generational differences since our readership really runs the gamut.
