Fans Blast Denver DC Vance Joseph as Broncos’ Defense Struggles Against Jaguars

December 21, 2025 by Heavy

Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph was taking heavy criticism on X on Sunday as Denver’s defense struggled at key moments against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the frustration was loud enough that Joseph’s name was getting dragged into a bigger question: what the Broncos’ defensive identity is supposed to be with the playoffs nearing.

The backlash hit in real time as the game tightened up. With about midway through the third quarter, Jacksonville led 31-17, and fans were pointing fingers at scheme, coverages and late-drive execution. Once the Jaguars opened up the lead even further, the cries got louder.

Key details

  • The Broncos entered Week 16 12-2 with major AFC seeding stakes.
  • Denver’s defense came in statistically elite: 58 sacks and 18.6 points allowed per game.
  • Fans still erupted as Jacksonville found chunk plays and red-zone success, the exact area that gets magnified in January.

Denver’s offense certainly had moments today where they didn’t convert when needed, but the defense’s struggles today is the story.

Broncos Fans Rip Vance Joseph as Jaguars Find Big Plays

The social-media pile-on wasn’t subtle. In posts circulating during the game, some fans called for Joseph to be fired, while others argued the Broncos were getting “embarrassed” on defense and blamed “play-calling” and “scheme mistakes.” The onslaught of messages caused Joseph’s name to trend on X.

The timing is what makes it sting for Denver: this wasn’t a random early-season blip. This was a high-profile Week 16 matchup with real playoff implications, the kind of game where a defense is expected to look organized, aggressive, and buttoned-up.

Instead, Jacksonville repeatedly found ways to move the ball in crucial spots, including a momentum-swinging chunk play that helped set up a Jaguars touchdown drive late in the third quarter.

This Broncos vs Jaguars game is showing why I take issue with Vance Joseph as our defensive coordinator, sometimes.

The scheme mistakes are showing and they make zero sense.

Yes, the refs love throwing the yellow flag vs Denver, but our defensive scheme is awful.

And while some frustration always spills out during any close game, Joseph has become an easy lightning rod because Broncos fans have seen versions of this movie before: a defense that looks dominant for stretches, then suddenly looks vulnerable when the opponent gets into rhythm.

What It Means for the Broncos Going Forward

Here’s the uncomfortable part for Denver: the bar changes when you’re 12-2 and chasing the No. 1 seed. And with a loss to Jacksonville, Denver’s path to the No. 1 seed shifted.

If the Broncos are going to make a real run, fans (and the organization) will judge the defense less by season-long rankings and more by situational football, third downs, red zone, and how clean the communication looks when the opponent speeds the game up.

The numbers say Denver has been a top unit. Again: 58 sacks and 18.6 points allowed per game entering Week 16 is championship-level production.

But games like this are exactly where confidence can wobble, because Jacksonville wasn’t just nickel-and-diming. The Jaguars mixed in explosive gains and finished drives, and that’s the type of thing that can flip a playoff game fast.

This also matters because Joseph’s name pops up every cycle when head-coaching jobs open. When fans are screaming on X during a nationally watched game, that chatter doesn’t help his “rising candidate” narrative , fair or not.

Stats, Score, and What Happens Next

Denver still had time to respond, but the bigger storyline is already set: if the Broncos don’t look sharp defensively against playoff-caliber opponents, Joseph will keep wearing it, especially with the postseason close enough that every snap feels like a referendum.

Next steps to watch for:

  • Sean Payton’s postgame comments (does he defend scheme execution, point to penalties, or hint at adjustments?)
  • Any mention of communication breakdowns in coverage
  • Whether Denver’s defense looks different in its next “pressure” spot

Because even with a great season resume, Broncos fans are telling you what they’re worried about: not whether the defense can rack up sacks, but whether it can close when it matters most.
