Most of the Tigers top 100 position prospects will take part, including one surprise.
Major League Baseball’s spring prospect showcase was a pretty big hit when in debuted last spring. The 2025 edition of the Spring Breakout series figures to be even better, particularly where the Detroit Tigers are concerned. On Sunday, March 16, teams of prospects representing the Tigers and the Atlanta Braves will square off for a 4:05 p.m. ET matchup.
The Tigers will have five prospects on MLB Pipeline’s top 100 on their squad. Shortstop Kevin McGonigle and center fielder Max Clark will lead the way. The Tigers dynamic duo of slugging catchers will also be on hand. Thayron Liranzo has already made a strong impression in major league camp, while Josue Briceño has been in minor league camp this spring.
The most interesting inclusion will be 2024 first round pick SS Bryce Rainer. Rainer played on the backfields a bit after the draft, but this will be the first time we get a look at him with the Tigers’ organization. It feels like a positive sign for his development since draft day that the Tigers are willing to put him out there in this game.
The Braves are in a rough stretch in terms of their farm system, and so they don’t have a top 100 prospect representing them in the game. Either way, always fun to see the best young talent go head-to-head, so this should be fun. One would think the Tigers have a big advantage here, but in one game obviously anything can happen and pitching will probably rule the day.
Other notable position players on the Tigers roster include INF Hao-Yu Lee, C Enrique Jimenez, INF Franyerber Montilla, 2B Max Anderson, 3B Carson Rucker, who hasn’t been seen since a season ending shoulder injury early last year, and OF Roberto Campos. All of those are represented in our BYB top 41 prospect list for the Tigers this season.
As far as pitchers, the Tigers will be led by RHP Jaden Hamm and RHP Troy Melton. RHP Joseph Montalvo, RHP Michael Massey, making his pro debut, RHP Joseph Montalvo, and RHP Tyler Owens, are the most notable pitchers slated to take part.
