With just 6 games left in the 2025 regular season, the Dallas Cowboys seem like they’re just starting to hit their stride.
The evidence was on display for everyone in Week 12, when the Cowboys rallied from a 21-0 deficit for a 24-21 win over the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, tying the record for the biggest comeback in franchise history.
That win had the entire football world buzzing, but it didn’t come without a price and the Cowboys will have to figure out a way to beat the Kansas City Chiefs on Thanksgiving Day in Week 13 without one of their key offensive linemen.
“Left tackle Tyler Guyton is dealing with a high ankle sprain and is unlikely to be available Thursday vs. the Chiefs, per multiple sources,” ESPN’s Todd Archer wrote on X on Monday, November 24. “Nate Thomas would start.”
Guyton, 6-foot-8 and 327 pounds, has emerged as a viable full time starter in 2025 protecting quarterback Dak Prescott’s blind side. He’s started 10 of 11 games this season only missing a Week 5 loss to the New York Jets while he was in concussion protocol.
“Cowboys (OT) Tyler Guyton has improved a lot from year one to year two,” Bloggin’ the Boys writer Brandon Loree wrote on his official X account. “His pressure rate allowed has dropped from 9.4% to 7.2%. That ranks in the Top 10 for lowest pressure rate allowed for all left tackles this season, per NFL Pro.”
The Cowboys are 5-5-1 after the win over the Eagles. The Chiefs are equally as desperate, improving to 6-5 with an overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 12.
Stock Way Down on Guyton Headed Into Year 2
Guyton has spent the 2025 season establishing himself as a viable option for the Cowboys moving forward.
It’s something that was very much in doubt following his rookie year in after he was selected in the first round (No. 29 overall) of the 2024 NFL draft and signed a 4-year, $13.15 million contract.
Yahoo Sports NFL reporter Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz put Guyton on his list of “Nine NFL Players Who Need To Step Up After Rough Rookie Years” on June 9.
“A rough transition to the professional level seemed inevitable for Guyton … who offered an enticing package of athleticism but lacked the refinement to engender much trust as a rookie as he flipped from right tackle to the left side,” Middlehurst-Schwartz wrote. “The No. 29 overall pick started 11 games for the Cowboys and proved to be a weak link for the line , committing 18 penalties while struggling mightily against in both pass protection and run blocking.”
What Cowboys Have in Nate Thomas
The Cowboys might end up counting themselves lucky to have Thomas, 6-foot-5 and 331 pounds, ready to step in for Guyton.
Selected in the seventh round (No. 233 overall) of the 2024 NFL draft out of the University of Louisiana, Thomas spent all of his rookie year on injured reserve. He has played in all 11 games in 2025 with one start, when Guyton was out against the Jets.
“A reported high ankle sprain for Tyler Guyton isn’t good for him after he’d stacked some quality games ,” Cowboys Report’s Tom Delaney wrote on his official X account. “Good News — Nate Thomas seems better at LT than right and was solid vs. Philly.”
