Chiefs Coach Becomes Betting Favorite To Fill AFC Coaching Vacancy

December 29, 2025 by Heavy

The Kansas City Chiefs‘ season will be officially over come Sunday, but the team has likely had one eye cast to a rare early vacation in the Caribbean for the past few weeks since being eliminated from playoff contention.

Those however, who will likely have to remain behind and stay focused in the coming weeks will be the Chiefs’ assistants and staff, some of whom could be up for external promotions to coordinator – or indeed head coaching jobs.

And one of those in pole position to get one of the coveted head coaching jobs – for what would be the second time in his career – is Chiefs offensive coordinator, Matt Nagy. In fact, according The Draft Network’s Jaime Eisner, Nagy is the favorite to be the new HC of the Tennessee Titans.

Odds to be the Tennessee Titans’ next head coach:

“Odds to be the Tennessee Titans’ next head coach:”, Eisner wrote in a post on X.

“Matt Nagy (+250) Mike McCarthy (+275) Arthur Smith (+500) Jesse Minter (+700) Joe Brady (+800) Kliff Kingsbury (+800) Steve Sarkisian (12/1) Brian Flores (14/1) Klint Kubiak (16/1) Mike Kafka (16/1) Robert Saleh (18/1)”.

Matt Nagy Favored To Land The Titans Head Coaching Role

Nagy first came onto the scene as offensive coordinator in Kansas City from 2016 to 2017, before being hired by the Chicago Bears as head coach. He oversaw the development and indeed the rise and fall of #2 overall pick, Mitchell Trubisky , before being fired after the 2021 season.

He returned to the Chiefs in 2022 as the senior offensive assistant and got promoted back to his old OC role after Mike Kafka took the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator job in 2023.

Since then, the Chiefs have posted sub-par regular season performances on offense, despite going to two Super Bowls, winning one. And some of that downturn in performance can also be attributed to the departure of All-Pro wideout, Tyreek Hill .

But it seems like Nagy’s experience as a head coach – where he did make the playoffs twice, in Chicago – and tenure under offensive guru, Andy Reid, could see him being a surprisingly tantalizing prospect in a year with few standout candidates to fill head coaching vacancies.

Where Would The Chiefs’ Offense Go Without Matt Nagy?

The short answer is – likely more or less where it was before, which is to say similar if not better. Nagy did not come in and revolutionize Andy Reid’s scheme.

Indeed, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has not been competitive for the MVP since the former Bears head coach took over in 2023, having won it twice in the five years prior.

Mahomes is not going anywhere, and it seems like neither is Reid for the time being. Nagy is a comfortable, known figure within the organization, so there is no doubt he will be missed if he is bought on by the Titans – or any other team looking for a head coach. But it is unlikely that the Chiefs’ offense will be vastly diminished by his absence.
