Breakout Player for Tigers Lands on IL

July 27, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

A hamstring injury has hampered Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene , with the 23-year-old about to go on the 10-day IL. This is an unfortunate time for this injury to occur so close to the MLB Trade Deadline on July 30th. Utility player Ryan Vilade has been recalled from Triple-A in response to this injury. Greene’s exact diagnosis was a right hamstring strain.

Tigers Breakout Player Riley Greene Goes on IL

Greene’s Successful Season

Before getting hamstrung with a hamstring injury, Greene was having a fairly successful season. He had a .264 batting average, 17 home runs, 51 RBIs, and 98 hits. His 17 dingers lead the team. It’s a significant setback for the Tigers, who are now trying to make a push for a Wild Card spot following a successful series against the struggling Toronto Blue Jays . It’s been a continuous train of non-stop injuries this season, and it’s been hard to stop the bleeding. Practically every team in MLB has had to deal with an abundance of injuries .

Greene sits in the top five for OPS in the American League at .842. This helped lead to his first All-Star selection, which is a boost of confidence for the Orlando, Florida youngster. Greene also hit the 100-game mark for the first time on July 24th. The growth each year in his career hasn’t gone unrecognized. In his first season with the Tigers, he hit four home runs, and then last season, 11. He’s already at 17 just barely into the second half of the season. Hopefully, his injury doesn’t leave him on the IL for too long, but it’s already a setback in his most successful season so far. His career high in RBI (51), along with his decreasing strikeout rate (25.5%) and increasing walk rate (11.9%) were all positive signs for Greene this season.
