The Buffalo Bills lost for the first time in the 2025 regular season last Sunday night, when the New England Patriots‘ second year quarterback, Drake Maye, came up with a game-winning drive to win the game 23-20 in Buffalo.
And yet, panic will not start to creep in just yet, one would hope.
In fact, with regards to trades, the team could well be more of a seller than a buyer prior to November’s deadline, unless they find an elite talent on the edge or a high-level pass catcher.
At this point, given their depth at certain spots – like wide receiver – they may look to offload certain expendable pieces. One of those expendable pieces could end up being former Carolina Panthers second round pick, Curtis Samuel.
In this trade proposal, the Bills make a deal with division rivals, the Miami Dolphins , to send Samuel to South Florida for a seventh round pick.
Curtis Samuel Has Underperformed In Buffalo
Samuel was signed to a three-year, $24 million deal by the Bills in the 2024 offseason, having spent the previous three years with the Washington Commanders .
Although over the course of his three years in Washington he never managed to top the 851 receiving yards he managed in the final year of his rookie deal with the Panthers , he put together two consecutive 600+ yard receiving seasons, which in 2022 also included an additional 187 yards running the ball.
However, since signing with the Bills , he has not been able to keep up with his WR2/3-level, dual-threat production, obtaining just 253 receiving yards in 2024.
And to make matters worse, Samuel was not even active on the game-day roster for the first three weeks of the season before finally being given some opportunities to make an impact in-game.
Since returning to the fold, the former Panther has managed just 3 receptions for 35 yards and 1 touchdown over the past two games.
What Would A Trade To The Dolphins Look Like?
Buffalo is hardly keen on making a habit out of sending players at key positions to rival franchises.
But at this point, it would seem to be a win-win: Miami resemble little to no threat to the Bills , currently lying at 1-4 with head coach Mike McDaniel firmly on the hot seat.
The Dolphins ‘ offense needs some spark after losing Tyreek Hill to a season-ending dislocated knee and ACL tear, and Samuel could come in and help fill the void as the third option behind Jaylen Waddle and Malik Washington .
The Bills lose and risk very little in letting Samuel walk, including the threat of his success coming back to bite them later on this year
At this moment, the Colts, the Chiefs and the Chargers are more important and credible threats to the Bills’ success in the 2025 season than Miami. So if the ex-second rounder can be moved for a positive value – Buffalo should jump on it as quickly as possible.
Even in the best case scenario, however, the compensation back will likely be less than enthralling. But given Samuel’s limited role in the offense – getting anything back could be worth it for Buffalo.
