The NFL officials are once again the topic of conversation following a controversial call in the Lao Angeles Rams-Chicago Bears game on Sunday night.
And it was on a play that looked very familiar.
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford fired off a pass to Devante Adams on second-and-10 in the fourth quarter. Adams appeared to make the grab; however, Chicago defensive back Tyrique Stevenson was the one who came away with the ball at the end.
But here’s where the officials come into play.
It was a ruled a catch for Adams, while the day prior, the Denver Broncos and Ja’Quan McMillian were awarded the interception on a similar play despite it looking like Buffalo Bills wide receiver Brandin Cooks made the catch.
“He had a step on me, and I just fought through the hands and finished the play,” McMillian said after the game (per ESPN ). “He actually had the ball coming down, and once I had my hand on the ball, I was able to take it from him. I fell on top of him and just held the ball up and showed the fans some love.”
Twitter Reacts To This Play In Comparison To The Bills-Broncos
“they literally called this a interception against the bills like 18 hours ago lmao,” one person wrote.
“It’s a catch because the player isn’t in a bills jersey,” a Bills fan commented.
“THATS A CATCH BUT COOKS WASN’T. RIGGED LEAGUE,” another person posted.
“i mean. come on @NFLOfficiating if you’re gonna call it one way in one game, you gotta call it the same in every game. nfl officials should be embarrassed after this weekend,” someone said .
“NFL knows what they’re doing by posting this,” one fan stated.
Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott Sounded Off At The Officiating
In a pool report after his postgame press conference, Bills head coach Sean McDermott didn’t hold back regarding this controversial play.
“That play is not even close. That’s a catch all the way … and nobody can convince me that that ball is not caught and in possession of Buffalo,” McDermott said (per ESPN ). “I just have no idea how the NFL handled it, in particular, the way that they did. I think the players and the fans deserve an explanation, you know?”
McDermott was then asked if there’s anything that he can do about this.
“Here’s the deal, right? The fans deserve more. The players certainly deserve more,” he stated (per PFF ). They deserve an explanation, and it’s a shame that a game is decided on a call like that, and there is no time spent with the head official going underneath the hood or to the replay booth, right? To the monitor. I don’t understand how that works. I don’t understand how that could be the case when it’s such a close play, so basically there is one person ruling on that play or, only New York ruling on that play? I don’t agree with that. If that’s the case, I don’t agree with that — that that is the best approach to decide a game like that.”
