Scores, news, and notes from around the Detroit Tigers farm system for Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
Toledo Mud Hens 6, St. Paul Saints 5 (box )
Last minute heroics from Andrew Navigato and Trei Cruz saved the Hens bacon on Tuesday as they walked off the Saints.
Devin Smeltzer just didn’t have it in this one, surrendering four runs in the first inning. He wouldn’t make it out of the second inning as he unfortunately took a hard line drive right to his pitching arm, so the Hens bullpen had a lot of work to do in this one.
A walk to Hao-Yu Lee and singles from Jusytn-Henry Malloy and Akil Baddoo produced the Hens first run in the bottom of the first. Meanwhile, Tanner Rainey, Alex Lange, and Jordan Balazovic got them through the sixth without another outburst from the Saints.

There was a rough moment in the bottom of the second as Eduardo Valencia suffered a leg injury and had to leave the game. He was the DH in this one, and Navigato took over his spot in the order.
The Hens offense was pretty quiet as well until the fifth. Trey Sweeney doubled to lead off the inning and Malloy walked. Sweeney stole second base and scored on a Jace Jung ground out, and then Baddoo walked as well. Ryan Kreidler was optioned back to Toledo on Tuesday to make way for Detroit Tigers new starting pitcher Chris Paddack, and Kreidler doubled in Malloy and Baddoo to tie the game at 4-4.
Sweeney doubled again in the sixth, and walks to Jung and Baddoo loaded the bases with two outs, but this time Kreidler grounded out to end the inning.
Matt Seelinger handled the seventh, but allowed a go-ahead run in the eighth. Bailey Horn allowed one hit but struck out two in a clean top of the ninth.
Finally, in the bottom of the ninth, Jung led off with a single and Baddoo walked after winning an ABS challenge. A Kreidler grounder forced Baddoo at second, but Navigato doubled in Jung and Trei Cruz stepped to the dish and delivered a game winning single to start the party at home plate.

Akron RubberDucks 5, Erie SeaWolves 1 (box )
The SeaWolves had their chances and couldn’t come through enough with runners on base in this one, while the bullpen leaked a few runs to make their job tougher. As a result, they dropped the opener in Akron on Tuesday afternoon.
Austin Bergner got the start, and he was fine. The right-hander wasn’t hit that hard, but he wasn’t able to slip out of trouble a couple of times, giving up a run in the first and another in the third.

Jake Holton produced the only SeaWolves run when he led off the third with a solo shot, his 14th of the year, against rehabbing Guardians starter Shane Bieber. A tall order for a Double-A lineup to be sure.

In the fourth, Kevin McGonigle spanked a one-out single up the middle against Bieber, and Max Anderson followed suit with a single through the left side. Unfortunately, Josue Briceño grounded into an inning ending double play.

Tanner Kohlhepp took over from Bergner, but after a clean fifth inning, gave up three runs in the bottom of the sixth. A catcher interference call on Briceño didn’t help their cause, as Alex Mooney of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s fame in high school, doubled in a run. Another came across on a ground out before Kohlhepp finally got out of the inning, but it was 5-1 already and the Ducks didn’t look back.
In the eighth, one-out singles from Jim Jarvis and then a Max Clark double got the SeaWolves in position for a comeback, but Thayron Liranzo popped out and a fly ball from McGonigle to left field was hauled in for the final out to turn the SeaWolves away.

Reliever Trevin Michael, moved back down to Erie from Toledo on Tuesday, handled the final two innings in style, but the Ducks pen was up to the task as well.
Clark: 2-4, 2B, 2 K
Anderson: 2-4, K
Holton: 1-3, R, RBI, HR, K
Bergner (L, 6-6): 4.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, BB, 3 K
Coming Up Next: It’s a 6:35 p.m. ET start on Wednesday night.
Dayton Dragons 6, West Michigan Whitecaps 2 (box )
Alex Cobb reappeared on Tuesday in West Michigan, tossing two inning of one-run ball. He allowed a solo shot to Anthony Stephan in the top of the second inning for the only hit against him, and he struck out four along the way.

Rayner Castillo succeeded him and was terrible, giving up five runs, four earned, over 3 2⁄3 innings of work.
The Whitecaps got on the board in the fourth when John Peck singled and Izaac Pacheco walked with one out. A line drive single to left loaded the bases, and outfielder Brett Callahan, who we’ve missed since a leg injury in May, lined out to right field. Peck tagged and scored, but that was all they’d get out of the inning.
The Whitecaps had the leadoff man on in each of the next three innings but couldn’t score. Callahan launched his fifth home run with no one on in the eighth, and while it didn’t affect the outcome, Callahan is a pretty good corner outfielder with pop and loft in his swing who will be interesting to watch the rest of the way.

Joe Adametz, Freddy Pacheco, and Joe Adametz each did scoreless work out of the pen, but no further runs were forthcoming for the ‘Caps either.
Patrick Lee: 2-3, BB, SB
Stephenson: 2-5, SB
Callahan: 1-4, R, 2 RBI, HR, 2 K
Cobb (L, 0-2): ER, H, 0 BB, 4 K
Coming Up Next: It’s a 12:05 p.m. ET start on Wednesday as the Whitecaps look to even the series.
Dunedin Blue Jays 7, Lakeland Flying Tigers 0 (box )
The Blue Jays gave the Flygers a rude welcome on Tuesday night.
Jaden Hamm made a rehab appearance and had no trouble spinning three no-hit frames, though he did walk three. His velocity, which has already been down this year compared to 2024, was still well off and he averaged 89.3 mph with his fourseamer. We’ll see if he gets another rehab outing before returning to Erie or not.
Zack Lee took over from Hamm, and tossed a pair of scoreless innings before leaking two runs in the sixth. He gave up one more in the seventh.
Meanwhile, the Flying Tigers managed just three hits. Ricardo Hurtado had two, both singles, and Junior Tilien singled as well. They did draw four walks, but it was a very quiet day at the plate.
In the bottom of the eighth, Shay Timmer racked up the first two outs, but then threw away a comebacker. Presumably chagrined by his mistake, Timmer hit the next better and fully melted down, giving up four runs, all unearned due to his own error.
Hurtado: 2-3, BB
Hamm: 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 3 BB, 3 K
Lee (L, 6-4): 4.0 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 0 BB, 3 K
Coming Up Next: They’ll play a doubleheader at 5:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, with Game 2 a makeup from a July 3rd postponement.
