Akil Baddoo triples three times in Mud Hens victory

July 11, 2025 by Bless You Boys

Scores, news, and notes from the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Thursday, July 10, 2025.

Toledo Mud Hens 3, Omaha Storm Chasers 2 (box )

Recent minor league signing Devin Smeltzer acquitted himself well in his Mud Hens debut and the Hens had just enough offense to win this one. The lefty spun five scoreless frames with no walks, striking out three.

Akil Baddoo tripled in the first, but was cut down trying to tag and score on a shallow fly ball to center field. Instead, the game was scoreless until the sixth.

Hao-Yu Lee led off the sixth inning with a walk and was wild pitched to second. Baddoo scorched his second triple of the game to plate Lee, and then a Jace Jung grounder brought in Baddoo for a 2-0 lead.

Thomas Szapucki, another fairly recent veteran minor league signing, allowed a run in the sixth. The lefty was initially drafted in the fifth round by the Mets out of high school, and at one point got some top 100 consideration. Now 29 years old, he’s battled injuries and never been able to break through. The Tigers worked with him in Lakeland for several weeks, so we’ll see if they were able to add something new to his game.

PJ Poulin allowed the Storm Chasers to tie things up in the seventh via a Joey Wiemer solo shot.

However, Baddoo came up with his third triple of the night in the eighth, and scored on a Justyn-Henry Malloy grounder to recapture the lead. Lefty Drew Sommers struck out five in two scoreless innings of work to earn the save.

Has anyone had three triples in a Triple-A game? Probably, but I bet it hasn’t happened more than a few times.

Baddoo: 3-4, 2 R, RBI, 3 3B

Kreidler: 2-4, 2 K, CS

Smeltzer: 5.0 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 3 K

Coming Up Next: The Mud Hens take a 2-1 lead in the series into Friday night’s 8:05 p.m. start time.

Harrisburg Senators 4, Erie SeaWolves 0 (box )

Kenny Serwa didn’t have his best day on the mound, but it didn’t matter much as the SeaWolves managed just one hit despite only striking out seven times. Harrisburg starter Riley Cornelio didn’t allow a hit for five innings though he did walk four.

Serwa allowed a run in the third, and then two more in the fifth though one was unearned. He only struck out two, but the Senators didn’t hit him hard either.

Josue Briceño singled through the second baseman’s glove in the top of the sixth for their only knock on the day. A pair of walks in the fourth put their only runner in scoring position, but with two outs a grounder back to Cornelio from Carlos Mendoza ended that opportunity.

Meyers: 0-2, 2 BB

Briceno: 1-4, K

Serwa (L, 4-3): 5.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 2 K

Coming Up Next: It’s a 7:00 p.m. ET start on Friday night.

Lake County Captains 5, West Michigan Whitecaps 4 (box )

Hayden Minton tossed a decent game and the ‘Caps were cruising toward their third straight over the Captains until the bullpen fumbled the bag in the late innings.

Minton allowed a solo shot in the first, but was otherwise solid despite a distinct lack of strikeouts on the night. He allowed a second run in the top of the fifth before departing, and Joe Adametz got them through the seventh without any further trouble.

The offense finally broke through in the fifth, sparked by Austin Murr’s two-run homer after Andrew Jenkins led off the inning with a walk. Luke Gold walked with one out and Bennett Lee doubled him to third. Seth Stephenson struck out, but Woody Hadeen came through with a single for his first two RBIs as a Whitecap. It was 4-2 Whitecaps.

Unfortunately, CJ Weins had a rough go out of the bullpen. He allowed a homer to the first batter he faced in the eighth, and then allowed another run that tied the game. In the ninth, Weins threw away a leadoff bunt, getting the runner to third, where a sacrifice fly scored the go-ahead run. The Whitecaps went quietly in the bottom of the ninth.

Murr: 1-4, R, 2 RBI, HR, 2 K

Hadeen: 1-4, 2 RBI, SB

Graham: 1-4, 2B, SB

Minton: 4.2 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 K

Coming Up Next: They’ll meet up in Comstock Park again at 6:35 p.m. ET on Friday night.

Tampa Tarpons 6, Lakeland Flying Tigers 5 (box )

RJ Sales was cruising in this one until he flamed out in the fifth to blow a nice lead. The Flying Tigers fought back to tie it up in the top of the ninth only to lose via walkoff.

Zach MacDonald opened the game with a bang as the right fielder launched his second home run of the year. In the second, Ricardo Hurtado led off with a single and Cristian Santana walked. Junior Tilien reached on an error to load the bases, but Abel Bastidas grounded into a double play that scored a run, but nearly snuffed out a potentially big inning. Fortunately, Enderson Delgado cracked a two-run shot for a 4-0 lead.

For three innings, Sales was punching out everyone in sight. He finally leaked a run in the fourth, but in the fifth he ran out of gas and allowed four straight hits before giving way to lefty Ethan Sloan. Sloan got them out of the inning, but then allowed a run of his own in the sixth and the Tarpons led 5-4.

In the top of the ninth, Bastidas and Delgado singled, and a MacDonald sacrifice fly got Bastidas in to tie the game. Unfortunately, Logan Berrier took over from Moises Rodriguez, and the leadoff hitter reached on a Bastidas error. Berrier walked the next batter, and eventually gave up a walk off single.

MacDonald: 1-3, R, 2 RBI, HR, BB, K

Hurtado: 2-3, R, 2B, BB, K

Delgado: 2-4, R, 2 RBI, HR

Sales: 4.0 IP, 4 ER, 8 H, 2 BB, 8 K

Coming Up Next: It’s a 6:30 p.m. ET start in Tampa on Friday night.

FCL Yankees 13, FCL Tigers 12 (F/10)(box )

C Gabriel Rosado: 1-1, R, 3 RBI, HR, 4 BB

SS Jude Warwick: 2-4, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB, K

C Enrique Jimenez: 2-5, R, RBI, 2B, BB

1B Newremberg Rondon: 2-4, 3 R, RBI, 2B, BB

RHP Jatnk Diaz: 3.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, BB, 4 K
