AMC Networks has dropped the official trailer for Rise of the 49ers, a four-part docuseries on the San Francisco 49ers dynasty years, narrated and executive-produced by Tom Brady and set to premiere February 1-2, 2026 on AMC and AMC+.
Tom Brady Helps Tell Story of 49ers ‘Gold Rush’ Era
AMC is billing Rise of the 49ers as a limited series event that dives into the franchise’s iconic run from 1981 through 1995, when San Francisco won five Super Bowls and helped reshape modern NFL offense.
The new trailer opens with Brady — a San Mateo, California native and lifelong 49ers fan — alongside Hall of Fame legends Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Steve Young reflecting on the pressure and expectations that came with the Bill Walsh-era “Gold Rush” dynasty.
The series uses rare and previously unseen material from NFL Films, including sideline speeches, locker-room video and behind-the-scenes photos of Walsh as he installed and perfected the West Coast offense. Along the way, the show features interviews with Montana, Rice, Young, Ronnie Lott, former owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. and other key figures from that era, with Brady appearing on camera in each episode in addition to narrating.
Rise of the 49ers is a co-production of AMC Studios and Skydance Sports, with NFL Films and Religion of Sports serving as producing partners. Directors Ryan Kelly (The Great Brady Heist) and Nick Mascolo (30 for 30: The Tuck Rule) are at the helm, while Brady joins Gotham Chopra and others as executive producers.
What ‘Rise of the 49ers’ Means for the Franchise & Its Fans
For 49ers fans, the docuseries is essentially a deep dive into the origin story of the modern brand. The run from 1981 to 1995 covers the transition from Montana to Young, the rise of Rice as arguably the greatest receiver ever and the creation of the slick, pass-heavy offense that still influences the league today.
The show also hits at a perfect moment for a fanbase that’s lived through multiple “next great 49ers era” conversations with the current roster. While Rise of the 49ers is focused on history, it’s also going to invite comparisons between the Walsh-era teams and the current group chasing another Lombardi Trophy.
Brady’s involvement gives the project extra juice beyond the Bay Area . A rival quarterback who tormented the league for two decades now helping spotlight the 49ers dynasty is a hook for both New England and Tampa Bay fans, plus neutrals who followed Brady’s previous doc projects.
Because AMC is positioning this as a prestige sports doc that can sit alongside its scripted dramas, you can frame it as the NFL equivalent of a premium limited series rather than a one-off NFL Films special.
Release Dates, Episodes & How to Watch ‘Rise of the 49ers’
Rise of the 49ers is structured as a four-part limited series. AMC has set it up as a two-night event:
- Episodes 1 & 2: Sunday, February 1, 2026, 9 p.m. ET on AMC and AMC+
- Episodes 3 & 4: Monday, February 2, 2026, 9 p.m. ET on AMC and AMC+
The series will stream on AMC+ in addition to airing on the linear AMC channel, giving fans outside the Bay Area a straightforward way to watch.
Tom Brady’s 49ers Connection & How the Project Came Together
Brady’s involvement taps into his own history as a Northern California kid who idolized the 49ers before building his own dynasty elsewhere. That personal connection is likely to be a recurring thread throughout the series as he helps narrate how those teams influenced both his career and the broader NFL.
