Normally we’d be in the midst of starting up another hockey season now, but we’re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here’s our look at this date in hockey history for November 27th, featuring legend Gordie Howe .

Nov. 27: A Banner Day for Gordie Howe

The Detroit Red Wings great gets a hat trick of personal records on this date in hockey history . Let’s take a look at all of them.

1960: Howe becomes the first NHLer to reach 1,000 points in a 2-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs . He scores past Howie Glover in the first period for his 1,000th point in 938 games.

1965: Mr. Hockey becomes the first player to net 600 goals in a 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens .

1969: The Floral, Saskatchewan native gets a hat trick to become the first player to 1,700 points in a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings . Howe does this feat in 1,567 regular season games.

Other Notable Events

1941: The Boston Bruins score a record four overtime-goals in a 6-2 win over the Brooklyn Americans. NHL overtime games were decided by a full 10-minute OT session prior to November 1942. Overtime play resumes in 1983, but it is a five-minute, sudden-death format.

1946: Bruins assistant coach Dit Clapper returns for an injured Jack Crawford in a 5-2 win over the New York Rangers . Clapper gets a standing ovation from the 14,000 fans at the Boston Garden.

1974: Montreal begins a 23-game road unbeaten streak with a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins .

1991: Pittsburgh holds a 10-minute candlelight vigil for the late Bob Johnson before a game with the New Jersey Devils . The Pens coach passed away one day prior to the game, but Pittsburgh rolls to an 8-4 win. Scotty Bowman gets his 750th win behind the bench.

2007: Leafs captain Mats Sundin is the first player to net his 400th goal while a member of the Maple Leafs. His milestone goal comes with 17.6 seconds left in regulation, but Toronto falls to Montreal, 4-3, in a shootout.

2015: Arizona Coyotes coach Dave Tippett gets his 500th coaching win in a 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames . Oliver Ekman-Larsson gets the OT winner to help Tippett become the 22nd coach to get 500 coaching victories.

2017: Roberto Luongo becomes the second goalie in NHL history to win 200 games with two team as the Florida Panthers top New Jersey, 3-2. Patrick Roy was other goalie to achieve the same feat. Luongo got 262 wins as a member of the Vancouver Canucks .
