Scotty Bowman Coaches Game No. 2000

2000: The Detroit Red Wings coach is behind the bench for the 2,000th time in his career. He comes out a winner in this one like he did many times throughout his career. Sergei Fedorov scores with 28 seconds left in regulation to give the Red Wings a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks .

Bowman receives a two-minute standing ovation, but downplays it… per usual. He finishes his coaching career with the Red Wings in 2002 and still holds NHL regular-season records for games coached (2,141) and victories (1,244).

Other Notable Events

1926: Detroit gets its first win in franchise history as Frank Frederickson scores the only goal of a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks . Hap Holmes gets the shutout for the Detroit Cougars, who become the Red Wings in 1932.

1936: Toronto Maple Leafs star King Clancy retires after a 16-year career with stints on the Ottawa Senators and Toronto. Clancy spends most of the next five decades as a coach, referee, team executive and goodwill ambassador.

1960: The Montreal Canadiens Dickie Moore scores his 20th goal in the 21st game of the season. Moore equals the league record for fastest to 20 goals in a season in a 3-1 loss at Detroit.

1986: Buffalo Sabres great Gilbert Perreault retires after getting 1,326 points (512 goals, 814 assists) in 1,191 games. He was the top pick of the 1970 NHL Draft and played his entire career in Buffalo.

2003: Florida Panthers defenceman Mathieu Biron is the first player since 1980 to score a goal on his brother, Martin Biron. Matheiu’s goal helps the Panthers beat the Sabres, 2-1.

2006: Red Wings defenceman Chris Chelios becomes the first American to play in the most games in league history in a 3-2 shootout loss to the St. Louis Blues . He breaks Phil Housley’s record by skating in his 1,496th game.

2014: Frans Nielsen and John Tavares each score in the shootout to give the New York Islanders a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers . The victory gives the Isles a 15-6-0 mark after 21 games.

Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury wins his 300th game in net in a 3-2 OT win over the Boston Bruins.
