The Pittsburgh Penguins have possessed skilled Russian players, this article highlights their all-time Russian starting lineup. The Penguins have been home to some of the most electrifying Russian players in the history of the NHL. From game-breaking forwards to defensive superstars, these players have showcased incredible skill. These talents were enough to leave a lasting legacy with the franchise. Here’s a look at the Pittsburgh Penguins All-Russian Team.

Pittsburgh Penguins All-Russian Team

Goaltender – Alexander Pechursky

Alexander Pechursky is the only Russian goaltender to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He only played one game in the NHL, although his performance was memorable. A former fifth-round pick, Pechurksy was thrust into action as a 19-year-old emergency call-up. He made 12 saves on 13 shots against a strong Vancouver Canucks team in January 2010. His composure and poise under pressure was impressive, cementing Pechursky’s place in Penguins history.

Left Defence – Sergei Gonchar

Sergei Gonchar was a pivotal piece of the Penguins’ defence during their Stanley Cup run in 2009. He was an elite offensive defenseman known for his ability to control the game from the blue line. Gonchar’s vision, passing, and powerful shot anchored the Penguin’s powerplay for several years. Gonchar’s contributions extended to leadership on and off the ice. He scored 311 points in 322 games for Pittsburgh, while acting as a mentor to players like Kris Letang . Gonchar’s accomplishments with the Penguins cement him as the as the all-time best-left defenceman in Penguins history.

Right Defence – Sergei Zubov

Sergei Zubov ’s brief time with the Penguins left a significant impact. In the 1995-96 season, Zubov showcased his exceptional two-way play, scoring 66 points in 64 games. His ability to control the tempo of the game and make smart plays under pressure made him a valuable player during his short stint with the team. Zubov’s production continued in that year’s playoff run, where he scored 15 points in 18 games. Despite his brief tenure, Zubov’s impact is felt as he was traded for defenceman Kevin Hatcher . Hatcher himself would go on to have productive seasons with the team.

Left Wing – Alexei Kovalev

Alexei Kovalev brought an incredible mix of finesse and artistry to the ice that few others could match. He was known for his puck-handling skills and lethal shot, Kovalev quickly became a fan favourite during his time in Pittsburgh. Additionally, with 347 points in 345 games as a Penguin, Kovalev’s impact was plentiful. His knack for creating scoring opportunities seemingly from out of nowhere made him an exciting player to watch. Overall, Kovalev’s contributions to the team’s offence solidify his place as the all-time best Russian left winger in Penguins history.

Centre – Evgeni Malkin

Legendary Penguins Centre Evgeni Malkin is the best Russian player to ever play for the Penguins. Since being drafted second overall in 2004, Malkin has been a cornerstone of the team. He has scored over 1,200 points, while winning three Stanley Cups with the franchise. Malkin’s unique blend of size, speed and skill made him an unstoppable force on the ice when he was on his game. His ability to dominate games and help lead the team to championship glory earns him the spot as the all-time best Russian centre in team history.

Right Wing – Aleksey Morozov

Aleksey Morozov was a consistent, reliable presence on the Penguins’ roster during his tenure. Drafted 24th overall in 1995, Morozov developed into an important two-way forward for the team. Over 451 games, he tallied 219 points, while providing valuable contributions on both ends of the ice. Morozov’s speed and hockey IQ made him a versatile winger capable of being trusted in various situations. His steady performance and dedication made him an important part of the offensive group. As such, Morozov also gets the spot as the all-time best Russian right-winger in Penguins history.

Conclusion

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been home to incredibly skilled Russian players. Each of these players through their own contributions have etched their name into the annals of Penguins history. Their skill and contributions have brought success to the team.
