Sabres First Overall Pick Will Not Need Knee Surgery

April 20, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

A awkward collision knocked Owen Power out of the regular season . Today it was announced he will not require surgery. Power will still take around 2 months to fully recover from the injury. However, it will not cost Power any missed games in the 2025-2026 season.

The situation is not ideal for Power. However, not missing any time next season is the best news in this scenario. Power was having a career year, with 40 points. Despite the points, Power still has room to grow defensively. He ends the season a minus eight rating. Lindy Ruff told Power he needs to come back next season stronger. Dealing with the injury and meeting a demanding coaches needs, the young defenseman will have work to do this offseason.

Best Case Scenario:

The ideal scenario for Power is that he’s able to rehab this without any further concerns. That’s priority number one. It will probably take him until at least July to get healthy. After that once he’s back and ready to fully train, he can focus on other offseason goals. Skating and puck moving are the best part of Power’s game. If he can fill out and focus on being better defensively, he will be a massive asset for this Sabres team as they look to end the 14 year drought.

The Sabres will keep their fingers crossed that this happens. Finding Power a stable veteran right handed defenceman is something fans would like to see management take care of this summer. However, the Sabres made a $8.35 million per year investment into Power . Hoping that he could take control of the game while on the ice, much like his teammate Rasmus Dahlin does. A stable partner to help him with the defensive side of the game would certainly help with that. Especially as Power might experience some discomfort from any lingering issues with the knee.

The Owen Power knee injury shouldn’t make a difference for Sabres management this summer. Power should be healthy by Game 1 for 2025. The Sabres and Power dodged a bullet with this one. Both parties will hope Power recovers fully over the summer, and takes massive steps forward in his game next season.
