It’s another Monday Night Hockey on Prime edition of NHL predictions. Atlantic Division rivals clash as the Detroit Red Wings visit the Ottawa Senators. Detroit is in unfamiliar territory and slugging it out with the Tampa Bay Lightning for first in the division. The “Yzerplan” of general manager Steve Yzerman seems to be taking shape.
Ottawa is hoping to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second-straight year. However, there have been complications due to injuries and inconsistent play. The Senators are in last in the division, but there is plethora of teams bunched up in the Atlantic.
Let’s take a look at the statistics and the storylines in this Monday Night Hockey on Prime edition of NHL predictions.
The Red Wings Story
Detroit is in the middle of one of the longest postseason droughts in the league. The Red Wings haven’t made the playoffs since 2016 and haven’t been out of the first round since 2013. However, things are promising at the start of the 2026 calendar year.
John Gibson is the expected starter for this game but always check social media before locking down a daily fantasy starter. Gibson had some early season struggles but has a 13-8-1 mark with a 2.97 save percentage. The save percentage is still at .897, but it’s improved in recent weeks.
Alex DeBrincat leads the club in goals with 22, while Lucas Raymond is tops in assists (33) and points (44). Detroit is 6-3-1 in its previous 10 games, but lost back-to-back games against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Senators Story
Ottawa broke its own Stanley Cup Playoff drought last season. However, repeating that success hasn’t been easy. The Senators have seen plenty of injuries and Linus Ullmark recently stepped away from the team.
Leevi Merilainen is expected to get the start in this one for Ottawa. Entering Saturday’s game, the young netminder has a 3.46 GAA and an .872 save percentage. He’ll need to be better if the Senators want to get the two points.
Tim Stutzle has been a bright spot this season with 19 goals and 23 assists for 42 points entering Saturday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets. Drake Batherson is also putting together a nice season for Ottawa.
Prediction
Both teams are in unfamiliar territory this season. Both Detroit and Ottawa are top 10 teams when it comes to the power play. The two teams are also excellent on the faceoff dot with both squads in the top 10 of that category.
However, the Senators are 31st in killing off penalties so far this season. Ottawa will have to do a better job staying out of the box if it doesn’t want hand Detroit an advantage. The Red Wings also have more certainty in between the pipes, which should carry them to the win.
Prediction: Red Wings win 4-3.
Prop Bets of the Night
We close out this Monday Night Hockey on Prime edition of NHL predictions with some prop bets of the night. The over/under for the Red Wings and the Senators is 6.5, and we like the over in this (+110).
As for individual props, take Dylan Larkin to get a power-play point for Detroit. On the Ottawa side of things, take Thomas Chabot to get an assist.
