The captain of the OHL’s Brampton Steelheads, Porter Martone had a huge draft season. He put up 37 goals and 61 assists of 98 points in 57 regular season games. He also added four goals and five assists for nine points in six playoff games. Martone was part of Team Canada at the World Junior Championships. Already 6’3″ Martone has the size, speed, and skill to be a power forward. This will intrigue a number of NHL teams at the top of the draft board.

In 2024, Martone won double gold with Canada’s Under-18 team.  He helped the national team to a win at the IIHF Under-18 World Championship, as well as winning the Ivan Hlinka Cup. At the World U18 Championships, he was named to the tournament all-star team and a top-three player on Team Canada.

Porter Martone 2025 NHL Draft Scouting Report

Right Wing — shoots Right
Born October 26th, 2006 — Peterborough, Ontario
Height 6’3″ — Weight 208 lbs [191 cm/94 kg]

Skating

Martone has really improved his skating this season. While his first few steps and acceleration are decent, his top-end speed is very good. Once he is moving at full speed, he can beat a defender wide and take the puck to the net. His speed also allows Martone to get in quickly on the forecheck and absolutely punish opposing defenders. He has decent edgework and agility for his size, allowing him to carry the puck through the neutral zone and create effective zone entries.

Martone has excellent balance and a powerful stride. He is very hard to knock off the puck. Martone wins battles on the boards and in front of the net. He is tough for opponents to handle and is willing to mix things up in the dirty areas of the ice.

Offensive Game

Martone has all the skills one would want from a power forward. He has a heavy and accurate shot. Martone gets it off quickly with a very good release. It is deceptive and his toe-drag and shoot motion can beat goalies off the rush. He is also willing to get to the front of the net, causing havoc for goalies when he gets there. Martone has the soft hands and good hand-eye coordination to get deflections and pounce quickly on rebounds. He also has the ability to elevate the puck quickly, going upstairs even when in tight to the goalie. He is not afraid to get involved in the physical game and is often found in the middle of post-whistle scrums.

Martone is very effective on the forecheck, throwing big hits, pressuring defenders, and creating turnovers. When a turnover is created, he uses his body to protect the puck and maintain possession down low in the cycle game. Once he gets the puck, he is an effective playmaker. Martone has the vision and passing skills to set up a teammate with a tape-to-tape pass. His ability to control and protect the puck allows his teammates time to get open for a quality scoring chance. When they do, he can use his quick hands as well as his lateral agility to create a passing lane and set up a scoring chance.

Defensive Game

Porter Martone plays a responsible defensive game as well. He is willing to use his size and strength to help his teammates down low, defending against the cycle game. He also comes back hard and provides effective back pressure against the rush. Martone is willing to block shots and has a good stick that gets in the way of opponents passes. He does a lot of the little things well and his attention to detail will impress pro coaches. When a turnover is created, Martone is quick to get the puck up the ice and effective at starting the transition game.

Projection and Comparison

With Martone’s combination of size, skill, and willingness to play a physical game the comparison to the Tkachuk brothers is an obvious one. This is merely a stylistic one and not a projection of his skill and ability though. An older prospect due to his October birthday, Martone will head to training camp with the chance to make it to the NHL next season. If not, he could look at one more year in the OHL, or with the recent NCAA eligibility changes even a year of college hockey.  That said he is not far away. He has the potential to be a top-line winger who plays in all situations and is a real problem for other teams to play against. He can out physical smaller opponents, while he also has the skill to make third and fourth liners look silly.
