Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Kris Letang has undergone surgery according to President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas.
Letang Undergoes Surgery
Penguins defenseman Kris Letang underwent successful surgery to close a patent foramen ovale (PFO, a small hole in the heart).

The surgery was a success. As you can see above, the reason for the surgery was to close a small hole in Letang’s heart. While not a complicated procedure, anything involving the heart is a serious operation in general. This is especially true considering Letang suffered a stroke in 2022 . Thankfully, the surgery was a success, and Letang’s recovery time is set at 4-6 weeks. As a result, Letang should recover in plenty of time for training camp in September.
This is the second time in less than a year in which Letang has undergone surgery .
Letang’s 2024-25 Season
Letang played in 74 games for the Penguins this season. The defenceman scored nine goals and recorded 21 assists. In 19-year NHL career, Letang has scored 175 goals and has recorded 597 assists. Furthermore, Letang has won the Stanley Cup three times. In 2016, Letang scored the Cup-winning goal for the Pens.
The Penguins conclude their 2024-25 season on Thursday. After that, the organization will enter an important summer as the Pens look to find a way to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the 2025-26 season.
