Edmonton Oilers GM Hopes to Wrap Up Connor McDavid Extension Talks Soon
Rumour: Sportsnet provided an update on where talks stand between McDavid and general manager Stan Bowman. Edmonton’s GM appeared on CHED 880 to speak with Bob Stauffer.
Analysis: Bowman said that they hope to get talks “wrapped up” soon in getting a new deal done for McDavid. The Oilers GM said the the team’s captain is one of the engines that drives the two-time Western Conference champions.
Bowman has let McDavid dictate how the talks of gone. Edmonton’s GM said that he’s had good talks with McDavid’s agent, Judd Moldaver. The Oilers have given their star player plenty of space after another loss in the Stanley Cup Final. However, there’s plenty of urgency in trying to make sure one of the best players in the world doesn’t get to the free agent market.
Bowman also revealed that there weren’t any detailed discussions as of the interview. However, he said he was encouraged by the conversations that have happened so far. Bowman thinks a deal will happen when the time is right.
What It Means
The hockey world awaits to see what the McDavid contract will look like. Other big names like Minnesota Wild star Kirill Kaprizov and Vegas Golden Knights standout Jack Eichel are also eligible to get extensions. They are likely following the talks to see how other deals will fit accordingly.
There are a number of things to keep an eye on. The big thing will be how much money McDavid will get, but there are other things to monitor. Will McDavid go for the full eight years that he’s eligible to receive or will he go with a mid-range deal of four or five years?
This was brought up by Frank Seravalli or Bleacher Report’s Open Ice. One could see the reasoning behind this as McDavid could set up for another massive contract and to take stock of his situation.
McDavid said that his main priority is winning Stanley Cup. He did say that he’s got issues re-signing with the team if there’s a window to finally end the team’s three-plus decade long championship drought.
It’s likely that McDavid is going to get more than what teammate Leon Draisaitl will get in this next deal. Draisaitl is getting $14 million starting this season, but McDavid’s deal will likely set the market for the next couple of seasons.
