Welcome to another edition of NHL Rumours. The offseason is generating a great deal of buzz. With the draft and free agency closing in, the rumour mill is churning quickly. There are trade scenarios and also buyout candidates. That leads us to todays Rumours circling around the Dallas Stars and one of there defenceman.

Rumour: Frank Servaelli from Daily Faceoff talks about the Stars potentially buying out Ryan Suter
The Dallas Stars are the cream of the crop in the western conference. Under head coach Pete DeBoer, the team had reached the conference finals two years in a row. They’ve undergone immediate success and are very close to bringing the Stanley Cup to Texas.
Overall, the Stars are in great shape. The foundation of their core group is locked up for the foreseeable future. They are spearheaded by Roope Hintz , Jason Robertson , Miro Heiskanen , and Jake Oettinger . Also, they’ve seen an influx of youth come up with Logan Stankoven and Mavrik Bourque is not far away.
Key decisions loom for the Stars though. Veteran Joe Pavelski is going to retire. Matt Duchene is a pending free agent and they have other pressing contracts to give out. In order to save space, buying out Suter is the best case scenario.
Buying Suter Out is Smart
The latest NHL Rumours around the Stars makes sense for the club. Entering free agency, the Stars have a projected $16 million to spend. Thats not bad, but buying out Suter saves the club money.
Buying out Suter leaves them on the hook for $783 k the first year and $1.4 million the second year. He’s in the final year of his contract with a $3.65 million cap hit. Saving that money and allocating it elsewhere is smart.
Suter has not been bad for Stars overall, but the club needs to turn to younger players. They have a gem in Thomas Harley who is due a new contract and took the next steps in his young career. Also, Nils Lundkvist is a player they could give more opportunity to as well. The foundation of the Stars is great and if they can add stronger pieces around it it’ll propel them further. Jim Nill has a decision to make regarding the veteran.
