NHL Rumours: Canes Looking to Hold Onto Two Forwards

July 19, 2024 by Last Word On Hockey

Welcome to another edition of NHL Rumours , today’s edition is all about the Carolina Hurricanes free agents. Overall, it’s been fairly quiet since the free agency frenzy during the first week of July. Now, the Canes are looking to make some more moves. After signing a slew of defencemen along with some forwards, the team is looking to hold onto two of their centres. All rumours come from the original source and are subject to change

NHL Rumours: the Carolina Hurricanes Want to Re-Sign Necas and Jarvis

Analysis: Most recently, forward Jack Drury has re-signed with the team. He’s signed a two-year deal worth $3.45 million, and AAV of $1.725 million. It’s said that signing Necas and Jarvis are the two pieces that the Canes need. They’ve terminated the contract of forward Evgeny Kuznetsov Thursday morning.

The Canes spent most of free agency signing defencemen and left wingers but have yet to make any big decisions when it comes to centres. Necas and Jarvis are both restricted free agents as of this summer. Also, it’s  being reported that they’re in a bigger rush to sign Necas. He has a salary arbitration hearing schedules for August 4, which the team will be hoping to avoid. Jarvis on the other hand wasn’t eligible for arbitration.

The Importance of these Carolina Hurricanes Rumours and the Requirement to Sign Necas

Aside from wanting to avoid a salary arbitration hearing with Necas, who was drafted in 2017 has been one of the team’s major point producers the past few seasons. When he first started he finished his seasons hovering around the 40-point mark. One thing take into account is that he did miss a significant amount of games during that time. During the 2022-23 season, he made appearances in all 82 games of the regular season and finished with 72 points. Most recently he finished the 2024-25 season with 53 points in 77 games.

During his 59 playoff appearances he’s accumulated 29 points. Similarly to Jarvis, Necas’ progress especially considering that he hasn’t played a full NHL season very often has been beneficial for both him and the team. He’s been improving his game and it’s showing. At the end of the day, hockey is a team sport, and Necas coming into his own has contributed to the Hurricanes finishing higher in the standings than the expectation. Therefore, consistently being a Stanley Cup contender with depth like them.

The Need to Ink Jarvis

These rumours regarding Jarvis are a factor for both the franchise and the player, as he has been with them since he was the 13th overall draft pick, selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2020. During his time so far in the NHL has been slowly progressing. Over the past three years he’s gone from having 40 points in his rookie season to 67 points in his most recent season.

Whether the case is how long or how much his contract is worth, Jarvis is the one with more power. If he doesn’t re-sign, the Canes risk losing one of their tougher players. He’s been able to lay hits and take them. Besides this, Jarvis’ game improving has shown that Carolina has been a good fit for him. Aside from scoring three goals less than his rookie season during his sophomore season, Jarvis has stepped up this last year as well as having an increase in ice time.
