Will Borgen Signed by Rangers
Borgen has played for the Buffalo Sabres, Seattle Kraken and Rangers during his six-year NHL career. The 28-year-old has two goals and three assists for five points in 50 games. He has a Corsi for of 46.4 and a relative Corsi of -2.9. However, his defence since coming over for Kaapo Kakko has been instrumental since the Rangers acquired him.
The Moorhead, Minn. native has 10 goals and 48 assists for 58 points in 264 career games. Buffalo originally drafted him in the fourth round, 92nd overall of the 2015 NHL Draft. He was a defensive standout in the college ranks with St. Cloud State.
The veteran blueliner also registered 203 hits in 2022-23 and 195 hits in the 2023-24 campaign. Borgen ranks 13th among NHL defencemen in hits since the start of the 2022-23 season (476).
What it Means
Many left the Rangers for dead at the start of the new year. However, the Blueshirts have seemingly righted the ship and are in the mix for a Stanley Cup Playoff spot.
Borgen’s addition and the rededication to defence has seemingly saved the Rangers campaign. There’s still work to be done, but New York is in a much better spot than they were at the end of the calendar year.
Much of the improved play has to do with Borgen’s size and physical play on the defensive end. He’s being rewarded with a nice, new deal starting next year.
The move also means Ryan Lindgren may be running out of time in New York. He’s an unrestricted free agent at the end of year and is likely to be moved.
