New York Rangers rookie duo Gabe Perreault and Brennan Othmann earned Peter Laviolette ‘s confidence for the playoff race.
The Rangers recently announced the signing of Perreault (19 years old) to strengthen the offense of the team led by Laviolette.
However, Perreault is not the only forward for the New York Rangers. In fact, head coach Laviolette knows this and is confident that several players will take a step forward in this last stretch of the regular season.
In recent remarks before Wednesday’s Rangers-Minnesota Wild game, Laviolette talked about Gabe Perreault’s first training camp with the team, but also highlighted the impact Brennan Othmann (22) has had, and what he expects from him in the upcoming games.
Gabe Perreault and Brennan Othmann Will Be Important For Peter Laviolette
Gabe Perreault will be making his NHL debut after shining in college field hockey, where he recorded 108 points in 73 games with Boston College.
In addition, he comes from winning two gold medals at the World Junior Championship (2024 and 2025). On his addition to the Rangers’ training camp, Laviolette did not hide his fascination with the 19-year-old, mentioning that what he has been able to see is something of the highest level.
“His ability to see the ice, his hands, his ability to create and think the game through are at a real high level.”
The NY Rangers head coach acknowledged that Perreault is taking on a challenge of another dimension, considering that he is just making his NHL debut, but he has no doubts about his ability to succeed because, after all, he has overcome every challenge he has faced.
“He’s succeeded at every level…. This is the next challenge, but he’s answered them all before.”
Brennan Othmann, meanwhile, left Laviolette quite pleased with his performance in the 6-1 win over the San Jose Sharks. The experienced coach even felt that Othmann probably played his best game against the California team.
“Othmann probably played his best game last game…. He’s getting looks to score, the puck’s on his stick. The next step is to build off that.”
So, Laviolette made it clear that, despite the left winger’s good moment, there is no conformism, but that they will try to capitalize on that good energy in the face of the upcoming commitments.
Regarding the Rangers’ momentum, the coach explained that they are aware of the reality and that they have no alternative but to go out and win every game and score points.
“We’re sitting where we sit…. It’s about winning and collecting points. That’s a major priority.”
The Impact Perreault and Othmann Look to Generate
Gabe Perreault is a player looking to bring creativity to the Rangers. This season alone, he recorded 32 assists. In addition, Laviolette himself commented that positive things are already showing in practice, with a good partnership with J.T. Miller and Alexis Lafraniere .
“I think ‘Laf’ thinks a lot like he does, and J.T.’s a guy that’s been around a long time and could really help mentor and mold somebody out on the ice.”
A possible lineup would be Perreault – Miller – Lafreniere, betting primarily on speed and creativity. For his part, Brennan Othmann has an impressive physical presence. The young Canadian goes into the box and creates opportunities.
Laviolette is not only thinking about debuting young talent, but also accelerating the growth of those who already have a little more experience. The coach knows there is no time to waste and he will trust in this New York Rangers’ rookie duo.
The Rangers have only 8 regular-season games left, and they can’t afford to slip up. The next game will take place this Wednesday, April 2, when they host the Minnesota Wild at Madison Square Garden.
