The Washington Capitals have been in tremendous form lately. Alex Ovechkin has been the centrepiece of all this success. He came through for the Caps in their latest back-to-back against the Vegas Golden Knights and the Utah Hockey Club . Ovi potted five goals in those two games, including a hat trick against the Golden Knights. It’s been a great start to the season for the Russian sniper as he currently leads the league in scoring with 15 goals in 18 games. He’s also 1oth overall in points.
However, with everything seeming to be going in favour of the 39-year-old, Capitals fans were forced to hold their breath on Monday night. While chasing another hat trick against Utah, Ovechkin went down with an injury early in the third period. He was the victim of an awkward collision with Utah forward Jack McBain . The clash involved knee-on-knee contact and Ovechkin got the worst of it. Jakob Chychrun helped Ovi off the ice and he went to the dressing room. He did not return to the game .
Update on Ovechkin’s Injury
The Washington Capitals announced on Tuesday that Ovechkin is considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury. In addition to that, he is supposed to be further evaluated by team physicians on Wednesday. Head coach Spencer Carbery will hope that Ovechkin can return to the team as soon as possible. The Capitals have been on a roll in this first quarter of the season. The Caps currently sit atop the Eastern Conference and second in the entire league, behind the 15-3-0 Winnipeg Jets . Washington has also scored the most goals out of any team in the league. That is more impressive than people think, considering they were 28th in that category at the end of last season.
INJURY UPDATE: Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin sustained an injury to his lower leg during last night’s game in Utah, and is listed as week to week. Ovechkin will have further evaluation with team physicians in DC on Wednesday.

Not to mention, Ovechkin is chasing Wayne Gretzky ‘s all-time goal record . With the pace that he was on, there was a serious conversation about him earning the milestone by the new year. The “Great Eight” currently has 868 goals, just 26 away from the “Great One.”
