As expected, General Manager Pat Verbeek has made a splash during the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. The rebuilding Anaheim Ducks are continuing to waddle their way toward Stanley Cup contention for the future. Of course that means making big moves for big assets. Flying the coop this time is their veteran goaltender John Gibson , who was dealt to the Detroit Red Wings.

The Anaheim Ducks have officially traded away their long-time goaltender John Gibson to the Detroit Red Wings. The 31-year-old netminder has moved on from the team that drafted him all those years ago. It is a tough blow for fans of the goalie synonymous with Orange County, but it didn’t come without benefit. In return, the Ducks received goaltender Petr Mrazek , a second round pick in 2027 and a fourth round pick in 2026.
What they will get with Gibson
Looking at what the Ducks have been struggling through with their continuing rebuild, it can be difficult to see how good Gibson has been. But as we know, one player does not make the whole team. This is true for the now Red Wings’ goaltender. Despite the Ducks’ play the past few years, Gibson has not been an issue for them. The athletic goalie put together a solid season for the Ducks posting a 11-11-2 record with a goals-against average of 2.73 and a .912 save percentage.
To state it briefly, they will get a strong, experienced goaltender who could play for many more years to come. Additionally, there are two more years left on his contract, so they will have time to see how he fits into the team before considering an extension.
Last Word on this Story
It will certainly take some getting used to not seeing Gibson donning the Duck, but Detroit Red Wings fans have a lot to look forward to with him minding the pipes. Gibson was certainly in need of a fresh start and he will get just that with the up and coming Red Wings.
