Cossa remains sharp as Oil Kings push Winnipeg to the brink in WHL playoffs

May 15, 2025 by Wings Nation

Detroit Red Wings prospect Sebastian Cossa improved to 11–1 in the 2022 Western Hockey League playoffs as his Edmonton Oil Kings defeated the Winnipeg Ice by a 4–2 score on Wednesday.

Cossa, 19, stopped 20 of 22 Winnipeg shots — including all eight he faced in the third period — as the Oil Kings took a 3–1 series lead over the Ice in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Final.

Undrafted forward Carter Souch led the way on offense with a pair of goals for the Oil Kings in the Game 4 victory at Rogers Place, with Justin Sourdif (Florida Panthers) and Dylan Guenther (Arizona Coyotes) also scoring for Edmonton.

Cossa’s best save of the night came less than a minute into the second period. With the Oil Kings down a man on the ice, Winnipeg forward Connor McClennon picked up the puck while standing all alone in the slow slot.

McClennon immediately fired a shot on Cossa, who managed to kick the puck aside with his left pad to keep Edmonton up 2–1.

The Red Wings originally selected Cossa 15th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, nine picks after they took defenseman Simon Edvinsson out of the Swedish Hockey League.

The 6’6″, 215-lb goaltender posted a 33–9–3 record and a .913 save percentage in 46 games with the Oil Kings in the 2021–22 regular season. He also has 11 wins and a .906 save percentage in 12 appearances during the 2022 playoffs.

Cossa’s 20-save effort on Wednesday marked his first time posting a save percentage above .900 since Game 2 of the Oil Kings’ second-round playoff series against the Red Deer Rebels. Nevertheless, despite ending up in the .800s in five consecutive games, Cossa still managed to pick up four wins over that stretch.

The Oil Kings are just one win away from booking their first trip to the Ed Chynoweth Cup Final since 2014. They’ll return to action at Rogers Arena in Edmonton for Game 5 against the Ice on Friday at 9:00 p.m. ET.
